The principle upon which my lid locks arises from the'fact t lia.t,'in connection with the irregularshaped inlet, the inner surface of the inlet is made to incline in a piane towards the centre, and the outer surface of the bose of the lid is made to incline-in it plane from the centre; whereas the inclinations of lugs, and projections, and screws are necessarily made to incline, either onv the jar or on the lid, in a. plane coincident with the circumference of the lid or jar.

I claim contracting the inlet of jar at three or more portions of its cross-diameter, so as to hold the lid h near thecentre, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
