JOHN WEIDIG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN SYLVANIA,'ASSIGNOR1TO WILLIAM W. LYMAN, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 77,555, dated May 5. 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
TO'ALL WHOM ITMAYCONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN WEIDIG, of the city of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented al new and'improved Cap or Stopper for Fruit or Preserving-Cans or Jars; and I do hereby declareCthat the following is' a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
andto the letters of reference markedthereon.
My invention consists in cutting or formingv themargin of the top ofthe cap or stopper of a preserving-jar or any other into two ormore cams or elevations and depressions, by means ol` which, together with a strap whose hook-shaped ends take under the rim of the neck of the jar or can, the stopper is forced or wedged tight upon the neck of the same.
On reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specificationf f Figure 1 is a sectional viewofl the upper part of a preserving-jar or can, with the stopper of the same. Figure 2 is a view showing the method of fastening the stopper to the jar. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the stopper; and Figure 4 is a perspective view'ot` the stopper as at first constructedl Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views. A is a fruit-can or preserving-jar. B is a lstopper or lid, which takes over the rim a, and rests upon a gum washer or circular dat band, b. ,'Its rim, c, is bevelled, so as to give it asharper bearing on the gum, by pressing into it when pressure is applied to the stopper. The top margin ot' the cap or stopper is cut or formed into two or more cams or elevations and depressions, d d. When the stopper is fitted over the neck or rim a of the jar, a strap, e, of any suitable material, is set over the top of the stopper, at its lowest point, its hooked ends, ff, being placed under the rim or flange g, andits centre, i, inserted into 'the recess or centre 7c, formed in the top of the stopper. i v
It will be readily seen that the strap e is preventedifrom lifting/by its hooksf taking under the ilange g, and therefore, when it is turned, it slides up the sinuositios of the cams d, and thereby forces or wedges' the stopper firmly on the gum washer making a perfectly air-tight joint.`
I at first intended to construct the stopper with inclined edges, the inclinations being in opposite direc. tions diametrcally, but found that the strap could only be turned `in lone direction. It' turned oppositely, it was caught by the perpendiculars of the inclined edges, as shown in tig. 4.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the stopper B, elevations and depressions d d, recess lc, rim c, clamp e, fulcrum or centre. h, packing and seat b b', notched ring g, substantially as and'for the purpose described..
'In testimony whereof, I hereunto sign myname to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JOHN WEIDIG.
