JOSEPH NEUBERGER AND PETER J. ILLIG, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,21 6, dated April 11, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OSEPH NEUBERGEE and PETER J. ILLIG, of the city of Buffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Fruit-Cans; and we do hereby declare that the following is a fulland exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure I is a plan view of a rim, which is made of tin and fitted on and forming the top of a fruit-can. Fig. II is a section of this rim with its cap or cover fitted thereon. Fig. III is a section of the cap or cover, and Fig. IV

The nature of this invention relates, first, to making arim of tin or other similar metal to fit on the top ofa can or jar, having a slightlytapering neck with a groove formed therein for the reception of a rubber or other pack- I ing, so that when the cover is put on the connection will be air-tight; second, in making a cap or cover to fit on the taper neck of the rim having a flange formed thereon, in combination with a button on the rim for holding the rim and cap firmly together.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents a rim made of tin or other similar material, so that it may be tightly fitted on to the top of a fruit can or jar. It has a slightly-tapering neck in which there is formed a groove, as shown at a. This groove is for the purpose of receiving and holding a packing strip or band of rubber or any other suitable material which fills the groove and projects slightly, so that when the cap or cover is put on it will compress the packing and cause the cap or cover to fit on air and water tight. The packing O is represented as in the groove and projecting slightly therefrom.
B represents a cap or cover, which is also made of tin or other similar material, which may be spun or formed by the ordinary use of tools in a tinsmiths shop. A flange is formed thereon, as shown at b, so that the button D may catch thereon and hold the rim down firmly in its place.
D is a button of an oblong shape, which is made fast to the rim A by means of a largeheaded pin or bolt, d, the pin being soldered or otherwise fastened to the rim in a manner to allow the button to turn thereon. There are two of these buttons used, as shown. When. the fruit-can is filled and the cap or cover. 13 put on, then the buttons are turned so that they will. lap onto the flange of the cap, as
shown at the right hand in Figs. I and II, and I when it is required to remove the cap the buttons are turned so asto disengage the flange, as shown at the left hand in Figs. Iand II. These buttons insurea permanent and safe holding of the cap down to its place, so that no ordinary pressure from within will lift it from its place.

What we claim as our invention, and desire v to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a distinct article of manufacture, a
rim, A, made of tin or other similar material, having a slightly-tapering neck with a groove,
