OLAUS DAHL, OF NASH, NORTH DAKOTA.
BALL-BEARING STOVE-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 712,122, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed June 14, 1902. Serial No- 111,619. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLAUS A. DAHL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Nash, in the county of Walsh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ball-Bearing Stove-Legs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willena'ble'iothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has for its especial object to provide an improved ball-bearing foot for stove-legs; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims. a
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing a portion of a stove having one of my improved ball-bearing feet applied to one leg thereof. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 00 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken approximately on the line a 00 of Fig. 2, some parts being left in full. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line x 00 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2, but with some parts broken away and with the sections of the divided foot drawn apart.
The numeral 1 indicates a portion of a stove-body, and the numeral 2 one of the legs thereof, which leg, as is customary, is cast hollow or of angular form in cross-section.
The body of the foot is formed in two sections on at, having at oneend half-seats which closely fit a bearing-ball b, but permit the balls to project below the foot and also, pref erably, above the same. The two sections'of the foot are clamped together by a short nutted bolt 0, which also clamps to the foot a .pair of laterally-spaced metal straps f. The metal straps f are adapted to engage within the side flanges of the foot 2 and to be socured thereto by a nutted screw-bolt c. When the foot (1 a is thus secured to the leg 2, the
forward portion thereof bears directly against the flange of the leg 2 and the bearing-ball b of course rests on the floor. To give the ball I) increased traction or frictional engagement with the floor, it is preferably provided with shallow grooves or scratches, as best shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the inner end of the foot member a is formed .with a shoulder a and witha projecting lug 0. The shoulder a engages the inner end of the foot member a and holds the sections a a firmly against pivotal movements one with respect to the other. Preferably both of the sections a and a areprovided at their outer ends with upwardly-projecting lips or, which engage the lower end of the leg 2 and assist in securing the foot against lateral movements with respect thereto. An anchoring-screw 9 works vertically through the lug a of the member a.
When the anchoring-screw g is screwed downward into engagement with the floor, it is evident that the stove will be anchored in position as rigidly and probably more rigidly than in the ordinary construction, wherein the stove-legs set directly on the floor.
When the anchoring-screw is raised, it is of course evident that the ball 17, or rather the balls of the several feet applied to the several legs of the stove, make the moving of the stove over the floor or other support a very easy matter. V k The device above described is capable of ready application to stove-legs such as found in general use. It will, however, be understood that the device may be permanently secured to stove-legs or to legs of other devices in the process of manufacture.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is 'as'follows:
1. A detachable ball-bearing foot comprising a ball, a two-part foot holding the ball and exposing the same for contact with the floor, and a pair of metal straps connected to said foot and detachably securable to the flanges of the stove-leg, substantially as described.
2. A detachable ball-bearing foot comprising a two-part footaa, the section a of which has a shoulder a and lug a of the bearingball I) held by half-seats formed in the two sections a a, the anchoring-screw g working 100 vertically through said lug a the metal I In testimony whereof I aflix my signature strapsfsecured to said foot bya nutted bolt in presence of two witnesses. c, which bolt secures said sections a and a, l together, and the nutted screw-bolt 0' passed OLAUS DAIIL' 5 throughsaid straps fand adapted to be passed Witnesses:
through the flanges of the stove-leg, substan- S. A. LEE, tially as and for the purposes set forth. OLE OUVERSON.
