SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,294, dated October 19, 1886.

I To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Onsnnus G. STILLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stilts, of which the 1'01- lowing is a Specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to boys stilts; and the object of the invention is to provide a cheap, simple foot'rest that can be adjusted to any desired position on the pole, and which is adapted to be castin a single piece; and the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out inthe claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a stilt constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation of the foot-rest detached, and Fig. 4 is a perspective of the strap.

A represents the usual pole or standard, which, as usual, is rectangular in eross-seetion, and upon which is mounted the adjustable foot-rest B. The foot-rest B is formed with the bearing-surface B for the foot, which in outline is adapted to conform to the ball of the foot. Back of the foot portion B, and cast at an angle thereto, is formed a clamping por tion, B said portion being adapted to loosely fit the pole A, and is formed by the three side walls, B and the rear abutting surface, B, thereof.

\Vithin the above-described clamping portion, thus forming a loosely-fitting collar, and within the abutting B of the foot-rest, I form a concavity, B and cast within the same a lug, B, the top of which is flush with the surface of said abutment, (see Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings) whereby a strap, 0, provided with eyelets O 0 is adapted to be entered therein and passed over and buttoned to said lug 13. The opposite end of the strap 0 is provided with the eyelet G and is adapted to take over a button or lug, B, formed on the extreme end of the foot-rest B. lVithin the clamp formed -by the walls B B, and below the concavity B, there is cast an internal transverse rib, B adapted to bite in the pole upon which the foot-rest is mounted.

For the purpose of strengthening the footrest and preventing the weight of the walker from breaking the same, I form on the under surface thereof a longitudinal rib, 13, extend ing from the abutting portion B to the outer end of said rest.

The operation of the invention is exceedingly simple, in that in order to adjust the plate or rest B at any desired height, it is only necessary to elevate the outer end thereof, which, by reason of the clamp being formed slightly larger than the pole, said rest may be moved up or down to a desired point. By releasing the outer end, the weight alone of the rest will be sufficient to retain it in the position desired, as the clamping portion being formed at an angle, it, in connection with the internal rib, will cause the same to bind upon the pole, which binding is greatly augmented when the weight of the person is brought to bear upon. the foot-rest.

It is apparent that the foot-rest B may be set at a convenient height for mounting, and after mounting the walker may, by turning and lifting the outside of his foot at the same time, elevate said rest to a desired height and bind the same at that point by simply bearing his weight thereon. By a similar operation the companion foot-rest may be elevated. Again, if desired, the rest may be lowered to any de sired position in both instances, the weight of the walker being sufficient to sink the rib B a sufficient distance in the pole to cause the rest to be held firmly in position.

From the above description it will be seen that I provide a foot-rest of a single piece, complete in all its details, that can be readily adjusted to anydesired position, that is strong, durable, and that can be manufactured at a very slight cost.
