To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, DAVID GINGOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Coasting Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This lnvention relates to pleasure devicesv 'and has partlcular reference to devices of this character used especially by children in coasting on pavements by the use of wheels, or upon snow and ice by means of runners.
Among the objects of the invention is to improve this class of devices with respect to the steering mechanism and adjustabllity according to the stature of the user.
Another object of the invention is to facilitate the folding or collapsin operation,
The foregoing and other o jects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawin s forming a part of this specication in whic like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a sid'e elevation of a preferred embodiment of the invent-ion; Fig. 2 is al front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same when folded; Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a modiiied formof the device in operation; and Fig. 6 is a detail detached.
Referring to the first set of figures for a more specific description of the' invention, I show at 10 a platform of any suitable con struction upon which the operator' issupposed to stand while coasting. Said platform is supported by a pair of trucks, the rear truck comprising an axle 11 rigidly secured to the bot-tom of the platform and u its ends provided with wheels or rollers 12 removably secured thereon by means of nuts comprises 13. The front axle 14 upon which the front wheels 15 are journaled is rigidly secured in any suitable manner as bv means of a stirrup 16 to a vertical standard 17 which is adapted to be rot-ated through a limited degree around the axis of said standard. The means for connecting the front end of the platform for supportupon the front axle an extension 18 rigidly secured at the top of the platform and which extends forwardly from the main platform and there rovided with a circular notch or socket 18 1n which the standard has bearing in its Specification of Letters Patent.

The ends 19 of the extens1on 18 on opposite sides of the notch 18 constitute positive stops against which a block 20, rigidly secured to the front of the standard 17, is adapted to impinge when the standard and front truck are being rotated 1n either direction. rlhis means provides for safety against the tendency for the devloe to be turned too quickly and hence it reduces the liability to accident due to this cause.
A yoke 21 providing'for the vertical bearing of a collar 22 surrounding the standard 17 1s supported upon a horizontal axis, by means of trunnions 23, upon a brace 24 rigidly connected to the aforesaid extension 18. Said brace comprises, in the preferred form, pairs of arms 24 and 25, all having eyes into whichA the trunnions 23 extend, as shown especially in Figs. 1 and 2. rThis brace and its connection with the standard 17 constitutes the primarysupport for the standard, and the weight of the platform is borne normally upon a flange 22 formed upon the lower end of the collar 22. rllhe collar is connected rigidly to thestandard in any suitable manner. The form and arrangement of the extension 18, in addition to its functions just described, serve as a means for preventing the rider from standing too close'to the frontend of the platform. ln other words, the occupant of the device will of necessity stand with his feet in the rear of the extension 18 and therefore the likelihood of his taking a header will be lessened.
As shown in Fig. 4, the standard 17 is adapted to fold toward the platform, turning upon the axis of the trunnions 23 in so doing. As a suitable and reliable means to prevent such folding movement when the device is to be used, l provide a strap 26 having an eye 27 at its front end through which the standard extends adjacent the front axle, and having an veye 28 at its rear end adapted to extend over a bolt 29 and there secured by means of a detachable nut 30, said bolt extending through the extension 18 and platform 10. All that is necessary, therefore, to fold the device for storage transportation is to remove the nut 30 when the strap 26 will be free to slip from the bolt 29Oand the front axle and standard will be free to swing on the trunnions 23.

The handles 35 are shown pivoted at 36.to the upper end of the bar and are adapted to swing upwardly around said pivots, as suggested in Fig. 2, but the downward movement thereof is ended by lix'ed shoulders or stops 37. This provision of the pivotal handles provides for a better foldl ing of the device for storage purposes and' also enables the rider to pass obstacles with greater facility when necessary by reason of the fact either hanfdle may be lifted temporarily in order to pass such obstacle, the temporary cont-rol f the device being had through the other andle. It will thus appear that the hand es may extend laterally to a much greater extent than the1 Width of the trucks -or 4latform, making the normal control of the evice much easier than if the handles Were short. v

Except as just stated, the other parts of the device in this embodiment of the invention yare precisely the same as already described.

claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent l 1. lIn a coasting deviLce, the combination of a platform, an extension `secured upon the front end of the platform, said extension having at its front end a vertical notch and stops on opposite sidesthereof, a front axle, a standard rigidly connectedto said axle,
la brace extending upwardly from said extension, a yoke Journaled on a horizontal axis in said braces, the standard being journaled in said yoke, means normally maintaining said standard in a vertical position and .extended into said notch in the extension, means to rotate the standard, and a 'block rigidly secured to the standard andl adapted to coperate with said stops.
2. In a4 coastmg device, a platform, means -to support the platform including a front axle, a standard rigidly connected lto the front axle, a collar` secure-d to the 'standard and having a flange at itslower end, a yoke journaled upon said collar and resting normally upon said liange, means extending from the platform and sup orted upon said yoke whereby the front en of the platform is normally supportedupon the front axle, means to rotate the standard for 'steeringpurposes, and means co'perating with the said yoke to maintain the standard vin normal operative position.
