G. LARSON.
Sleigh-Knee; V
Patented Nqv. 19, 1867. I

G'UN'DER LAB-SO N, o F LAKE MILLS, WISCONSIN. Letters Patent No. 71,025, dated lll'ooember 19, I867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGH-KNEE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, GUND ER LARSON, of Lake Mills, in the county of Jefferson, and State of Wisconsin,v
have invented a new and improved Sled-Knee; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the figure thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the form and the construction of a cast-iron sled-knee as a substitute for wooden knees; that it is stronger and more durable, and, if broken, it is easily replaced by a. new one. The utility of this knee consists in the form being more than halt circle in each standard. These standards are curved in shape, meeting together under the beam-plate, as per drawing. The two standards are bolted to the runner and t0 the beam-plate. The beam-rave is bolted. There is a centre bolt that passes up through the runner, knee-beam, and rave. Thus the whole is firmly bolted together.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe its construction and use. I
In Figure 1 is a perspective view of the knee.
Figure 2 is a cross-section view on the line of A B of the standard in fig. 1.
I construct my sled-knee of cast iron in two curved half-circle standards, meeting together under the beamplate, as in fig. 1; the form of the standard like fig. 2. At the bottom are bolt-holes to receive the runner-bolts. In the beam-plate are bolt-holes to receive the beam-bolts, and also in the centre of the beam-plate a larger bolt-hole. This centre bolt passes'up through the runner, beam-plate, beam, and rave. The whole is substantially bolted together. i I .I am aware that a sled-kneepf a similar character has been used before, whose sides and outlines were enclosed, leaving a hollow, in which a core was necessary in the casting thereof. But my improvement relates to the casting thereof open at the sides, making the standards separate, in form ofan A, as shown, in the casting of which no core is necessary, making it much cheaper in construction, lighter,'a.nd equally as strong or durable.
Having described the nature of my improvement, I will specify what I claim. I claim a. cast-iron sled-knee, having separate supports, in one casting, as shown and described, as and for the purposes specified.
GUNDER LARSON.
