T01-ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that -I, J. P. This invention relates to an improvement in the construction ,of a school-desk combined with a seat, and consists in sneh an arrangement and combination of parts that the seat and the desk may be separately adjusted in height to suit pupils of different sizes, and that the seat and a lid of the desk may be folded up when not in use, to be compact and out of the way when desired, as hereinafter more particularly dcscribed.`
A A are supporting standards or legs on each end of the desk. B is the body ofthe desk, and C the seat.
The upper ends of the standards A A are fitted in grooves er recesses in the ends of the body of the desk, to slide freely therein, in such manner that the desk may be raised or lowered to any required height, and secured by pins, a, or in any suitable manner. The seat C is hinged at' both ends to the upper ends of slide-pieces b b, so that it may be folded up against the front side' of the desk B or be let down to a level, when it is supported by segment arms or braces c e that are pivoted at one end to the slides b b, while the vother ends are held in grooves or recesses in battenscl d on the under side of the seat, in such manner that they* close up or extend when the seat is folded or opened. The slide-pieces b t, to whielrthe seat C is attached by hinges, are fitted in vertical grooves or recesses in the bases or supports A A. to work freely therein in such manner that the seat may be raised or lowered to any desired height, and secured by pins e e, or by any othcr'suitable device.- A lid, f, is hinged to one side of the desk B in such manner that it can he folded over to lic on the top, or dropped dow-n to lie close against the front part of the desk, as shown in fig. 2. For keeping the lid level, to serve for a writing-desk or table, when required, two folding brackets g g are placed at the ends of the desk. The body of the desk is hollow, forming a boxior suitable receptacle for the slates and books oi' pupils, which may be set up on edge therein or on a shelf, t, which extends partly within the body of the desk. When the lid is let down it closes the hollow receptacle for books, etc., and protects them completely from dust, and also keeps them safe when the lid is locked. y l i It will be seen that the arrangement herein described presents great convenience forschool purposes. Tho seat and the desk are both easily adjusted separately to any desired heiglit to suit pupils of diii'erent sizes, and
the seat and lid, or either oi them, may be folded out'of the way, making more room for sweeping, or ior lectures or other purposes to which the room may be appropriated.
I-Iavingdescribed my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv 1. The arrangement of the school-desk B, supported on the sliding standards A A, and the seat C, hinged to the slide-pieces b b and supported by-the segment arms e c, constructed, combined, and operating as and for the purposes herein described. p
2. The lid f, hinged to the desk B,`in combination with the folding brackets gg, in such manneras to fold -on the top or close the hollow receptacle for books in the desk, arranged as herein set forth.
