'ro ALL WHoM 1r MAY concerts; Y
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. GILBERT, of Lyons,in the county of Wayne, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Screen-Attachment. for Wash-Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciioation.
Figurel is a perspective view of a wash-stand with my improvement applied thereto.
Figure 2, a top view ofthe screen, with the wings folded and the screen slid down behind the stand.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
My improvement consists in an adjustable screen, combined with a wash-stand or commode, for protecting the wall, which screen may be raised, when required for use, or lowered so as to be hidden from view; also, in forming the adjustable screen with expanding wings, so as to afford a large screening-surface,which wings may be folded in a small compass and slid down out of sight, 'the wings 'also serving to hold the screen in the `elevated position, when expanded, as hereinafter explained.
As represented in the drawings, A is a wash-stand or commode, which may be ofany desired form and construction. B is the body or centre of the. screen, and C- C are the wings, hinged respectively on each side of the body. The screen is preferably covered with simply an oil-clothe, or any suitable water-proof material.
Back of the wash-stand are secured vertical ways a a, provided with grooves b 6. AWithin these grooves rest sliding bearings c c, extending downwards from screcn B. When the screen B is in the elevated position, the wings C C are expanded, and rest over on top of the verticalways a a, and thereby support the weight of the screen and secure it in position. I
This screen will protect the wall from being spattered and soiled, which is ofivery great importance. The device is entirely concealed from view, when not in use, by simply sliding it down, when the stand or commode presents the usual appearance, and its applicationcannot b e detected by a superficial examination. The wings C C serve the purpose of aifording a larger screening-surface than would otherwise be the case, and, when expanded, they rest on top the ways a a, and retain the screen inthe elevated position, and, by being hinged to the body B, they are easily folded into a compact form, and'sl'id down'behind the stand.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to -secure hy Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of anadjustable screen, covered with oil-cltl1 or equivalent, with a wash-stand, so arranged that it may be raised or lowered at will, and hidden from view when not in use, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the Wings C C with the adjustable centre, B, so arranged as to expand and retain the screen elevated, or to fold to be depressed from sight, substantially as herein set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name 1n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' EDWARD F. GILBERT.
