HARNESS ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 708,676, dated September 9, 1902. Application filed February 6, 1902. Serial No. 92,881. (No model.)-
vused in connection with a leather or like support. Its object is to provide a durable reinforcement for the ordinary leather strap and stitching by which buckles and rings are held.
It comprises details Which will begmore fully set forth hereinafter, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top View of my improved retainer or fastener applied to an ordinary buckle. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of same on the line no m of Fig. l.
In the drawings, A represents a strap having the usual slot 2, through which the tongue of the buckle 3 projects. Ordinarily the buckle would be held in place by simply sewing the lapped edges of the strap together. The objection to this form of fastening is that either the stitching is likely to give way or the strap to become worn out. I obviate the tendency to wear and accident by the use of a metal plate or band B, centrally folded over the buckle and provided With a slot 4, through which the tongue of the buckle passes and in which it is freely turn'able. The ends of the folded metal band are secured to the strap by means of a rivet 5. The adjacent edges of the folded portion of the strap may then be stitched, as is usual, concealing from View the metal holder B and also preventing any abrasion that might otherwise result from the metal fastener. The tension is thus taken entirely from the stitching and the Wear taken from the leather, and the result is a fastening of great durability.
Having thus described my invention,wl1at I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a harness attachment and in combination with a strap and a fastening device carried thereby, a retainer for said device conf sisting of a metal plate between the layers of the strap said plate of less width than the strap and bent at its center and the members brought together to lie one on the other in direct contact, and concealed from view by stitching the edges of the layers together, and a rivet passing through the ends of the plate and the strap and securing the parts substantially as herein described.
