DAVID S. DUNCOMBE, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
HARNESS- ROSETTE.
SPESIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,993, dated August 26, 1884.
(No model.)
To @ZZ wir-0717, it may conce/'n.-
Be it known that I, DnviD S. DUNooMBE, a citizen of the lUnited States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Teunessee, have invented a new and useful Harness-Rosette, of which the following is aspeciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Myinvention relates to resettcs for bridles, halters, and harness, and for other purposes; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby the forehead-strap may be secured to the' side strap without any sewing or stitching of parts; to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, and one that will give an ornamental effect to whatever part of a harness it may be applied; and, further, to provide a device of this character which may be readily and quickly applied to or detached from a harness, and which will, however, hold the parts firmly and securely together.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the co1nbination,with a rosette of suitable construetion,of an attaching-bail of novel construction.
The invention further consists in the imi proved manner of securing the forehead-strap to the side strap.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a sufficient portion-of a halter to show the application of niy improved rosette. Fig. 2 is a vertical section ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a modification. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the side strap.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several iigures, A represents the foreheadstrap, and B the side strap, the manner of connecting which will be more fully explained hereinafter.
Heretofore in connecting the forehead-strap with the side strap' the ibrehcad-strap has been doubled or lapped around the saine and sewcd; but this manner of fastening has been objectionable from the fact that it required an unnecessary expenditure oi' time and waste ot' leather. However, by the use of my improved rosette all necessityot' such lapping or sewing is obviatcd. In constructing the same I employ as many disks or layers of leather as is desirable, and may scallop or otherwise cut the edges to produce an ornamental effect.
This, however, is not essential. Ihe iirst or lower layer or disk, c, is provided with two openings, b, through which pass the ends of the attaching-bail B, the ends of which, after being passed through said layer or disk, are bent down upon the leather at an angle. The next disk may then be att-ached, which attachment maybe accomplished by the use of small tacks; ora rivet passing through all the disks may be employed. The tacks will, however, be found to afford a perfectly secure fastening. The upper or top disk is secured to the nextadjacent or lower disk preferably by the use ot' a tack having a rounded or ornamental head, thus producing a much better effect than if the ordinary tack were used. The bail B ina-y be leent outwardly to form shoulders c, which bear againstthe under side of the lower disk, and thus prevent the bent ends from being crowded or pushed against the next adjacent disk. This bail B is bent to form an npwardly-extcnding pin or lug, d, as shown, and the purpose ot' which will be mentioned hercinhi'tcr.
' In securing the head-strap to the side strap, the said head-strap is provided with a slot, e. The loop is then pushed through said slot. The head-strap, which is slitted to forni two straps or sections, f, is then attached by passing the said straps f through the bail B, and as the saine is divided by the downwardlyprojecting pin or lug the straps are wedged or held securely therein against any vertical movement, the downwardly-proi eeting lug iitting in an enlarged opening at the end of the slot, so that when the straps are buckled it is held therein.
It will be apparent that in the construction of a rosette for connecting the parts above described the employment of leather is not essential, as the saine may be constructed of metal or other suitable material. In case metal is employed, the bail is soldered or otherwise secured to the rosette, which may be bnrnished or ornamented as may be desired.
, Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire te secure by Letters Pat-ent, is-
l. The combination, witha rosette, of an attaching-bail bent to forni or provided with a pin or lug extending inwardly from the lower IOO side of said bail7 the end of said pin or lug being located adj aeent to the bottom layer o1' the rosette, substantially as set forth. 2. The combination, with a rosette consisting of any number of layers 0f leather or oth er suitable material7 of a bail or loop having its ends bent to engage the inner side of the lower layer, said bail having shoulders to bear against the outer side of said lower layer, and bent to form a pin or lug7 substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the slitted side
