TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GDNCERN:
Be it known that I, V. LAPHAM, of El Paso, a new and 'useful Improvement in Bolt-Fastening; and do hereby declare t and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
AFigure 1 represents my improved fastening attached to a thill-coupling bolt; Figure 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line a: x, iig. 1, andshowing in red a convenient tool for detaching the fastening.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.'
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved fastening for thillfconpling' bolts, clcvis-zholts, and other pivoting bolts, which will hold theboltsecurely in place, and which can at the same time he easily and quickly attached and detached; and it consists in thefastening formed by the combination of the hinged parts, pivoted catch and rubber, or equivalent spring, with each other, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a thill-coupling, and B represents a thill-iron, about the construction of which parts, there is nothing' new. C is the bolt that passes through the eyes of the coupling and through the eye of the thill-iron. The bolt C has a neck formed upon its forward part for the reception of the fastening D, said neck having' square shoulders to prevent the lateral movement of the said fastening upon the said bolt. The fastening D, when closed, has the general form of an ordinary nut, and its main part is made in two parts, dl and d2, hinged to cach'other at one end, as shown in iig. 2. al3 is a catch pivoted in a recess formed in the free end of one of the parts, as cl2, and having a projection or square hook formed upon the under side of its projecting end, which catches upon a shoulder formed at the bottom of a recess in the free ond of the other part, as d. d4 is a rubber spring placed in a recess beneath the inner end of the catch d3, as shown in fig. 2, .to hold the said catch securely I nnccting the parts oll and d. The catch d3, and the recesses in which it is placed, are so formed in place when co that the outer surface of the said catch may be flush with the surface of the ends of the parts d1 and d2, so that he end of the catch must be no accidental-blow upon the fastening can unfasten it. To 'detach the fastening t pressed down with some sharp-pointed instrument, so as to compress the spring d* and raise the, hooked end of said catch from the recess in the end of the 'part d, which allows the fastening to be readily removed from the bolt.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A 'y The bolt-fastening D, formed by the combination of the hinged parts d1 and d2, pivoted catch d3, and rubber spring d, or equivalent, with each other and with the bolt C, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
in the county of Woodford, and State of Illinois, have invented V. LAPHAM.
