Description

U. REYNOLDS.
Pole Iron Socket for Carriages. No. 57,379. Patented vAug. 21, 1866.
fa Maw/w I N.PEIERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. wnsnmcmu n C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- UEL REYNOLDS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN POLE-IRON SOCKET FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,379, dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, UEL REYNoLns, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Pole-Iron Sockets for Carriages, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this s 'iecification, wherein Figure 1 is a plan of said pole-iron, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters denote the same parts.
At the end of the poles of carriages it is usual to provide an iron socket having a pro jection upon the under side to form a stop for a leather eye or loop that extends from the center-of the cross-bar for the harness, and through which eye the said socket is passed. This mode of attachment is unsightly and unreliable, as the leather is apt to be injured by the pole-iron.
The nature of my said invention consists in a clasp for the cross-bar or pole-yoke formed upon the pole-iron or socket, which clasp can be opened for removing the cross-bar, or closed and secured for retaining the cross-bar, and at the same time the said cross-bar is left sufficiently loose to permit of the motion that results from the horses. w
In the drawings, a is the end of the pole or tongue; b, the metal socket setting over the same. 0 c are cars formed thereon, between which is the clasp d, set to swing upon a hingepin that passes through it and the said ears 0 c.
e is a bimling-screw or lock 'to retain the moving end of the clasp d, when the same is closed to retain the pole-yokef, and any suitable fastcning may be employed in place of the screw 0. This pole-yoke or cross-bar f is of a size to fit freely in the hole left between the clasp d and socket l), and has'collars, one on each side of the said clasp, so as to'prevent much end movement of the said cross-bar at the same time that it is left sufficiently free to play in the clasp by the movements of the horses.
This improved pole-socket clasp is neat, strong, durable, and not liable to be worn out by the motion of the parts. i
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The clasp d, fitted as specified, in combination with the socket for the pole of carriages, &c., as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 31st day of March, A. D. 1866.
UEL REYNOLDS.
