Letters Patent No. 70,589, dated November 12, 1867.
GAR-COUPLING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN: l
Be it known that we, LUTHER BOYD andA PHILIP KRIEGBAUM, of Springfield, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Car-Couplings; and We do hereby declare that the following is a olea-r, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to l the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the coupling, and Figure 2 a plan ofthe same. The nature of this invention consists in the employment of a movable head, so arranged with relation to the other parts of the coupling that it will overcome in a great measure the jar Or shockof two cars coming together.
A represents the main body-Of the coupling, provided with the recess g, and the stationary head C. b is e. box, in which the pin or boltfrests. B represents the movable head, the shape of which is clearly shown in g. 2. e e are slides, which Work iu slots provided for them in the stationary head C. Said slides are securely attached at their front ends to the movable head B, while their Opposite ends rest against springs dd. It should be observed that the front portion of these slides are Hat, and their opposite ends round, as seen in lig. 1. The springsd d should be enclosed in a cylindrical box. z'represent holesin the slides for the reception of the pin. When said slides are forced back suliieiently to bring the holes zz' directly in line with holes z L, the pin drops in them, and retains the movable head B in the position indicated in lig. 2. The opening or mouth ofthe movable head should, of course, be flared', in order to direct the link, which is of the ordinary kindyto its proper place. I v
It will be noticed that our inventionwill not only prevent in a great measurethe shock of two cars coming together, but it will assist, when they are at rest and the pin is removed, to start them.
What we claim, is-
The movable head B, as constructed in combination with stationary head C, slidese e, and springs d d, all arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
In testimony whereof we alx our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
LUTHER BOYD, PHILIP KRIEGBAUM.
