TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: V
Be it -known that I, JAMES P. MORRIS, of Bloomington, in the connty of McLean, and State of Illinois,
hare invented a newan'l useful Improvcd Safety Car-Coupling; and I do lereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled 'in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the aceompanying draivings, forming 'part of this speeification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved car-coupling showing it in a working position.

A, fig 1, represents the car-coupling in its proper working position, with link and link-block in place as holdingthe cars together, the other end of 'the link to be held in place by the bolt or pinion in the usual manner. This coupling may be made of cast iron, wrought iron, or other equivalent material, by the usual wellknown methods of constrncting couplings by skilled artisans, with a recess, O, as shown in fig. 2, for the more secureholdng of the link-block in a central position, the ledges or flanges -b 6, and side catches D D in con nection with `the spring E. The dotted lines I K show the position of the'link and catch in the act of separa- 'tion, while the vertical section, fig. 3, explains more fully the construction of the ledges l? b, which hold the link securely in its plafce by means of the link-block G; a betteryiew of the same being found in fig. 4. Said block being a. solid mass of cast or wrought iron of a conical shape, with a groove in its edges to adnlt f-free play of the link upward or downward, the-block being held in place at the end of the link by a spur or projection shown at L, fi'g. 4. The holders or side catches D Dare fully explained by the drawing, fig. 5, in connection with the spring E, which is a simple bar-spring attached to the catehes by loops, and bent into place in the coupling, as shown at n, fig. 2, and the catches secured by pins at o 0 to the coupling.
Having thus describcd my invention, I clai'm as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bumper constructed after the manner as shown herein, with ledges b b, recess C, catches D D, springE, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
