LUSK & WELLS.
Car Coupling. No. 53,639. Patented Apr. 3,1866.

UNITED STATES PATENT p @FFIQE.
ALPHEUS A. LUSK AND SAMUEL A. WELLS, OF WOOSTER, OHIO.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,639, dated April 3, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, A. A. LUSK and S. A. \VELLs, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and we hereby declare that the following is a true, full, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l in the annexed drawings represents a vertical longitudinal section of the carbumpers and coupling-hook in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The nature of our invention consists in certain mechanical devices for coupling and uncoupling cars when stationary or in motion.
The letter B designates the bumpers having at their outer ends the excavations A. he coupling-hook C may be pivoted in either of these excavations, and made to catch on a rod passing at right angles through the corresponding' excavation. It will be observed that When the cars are uncoupled the hook G will be thrown back a little beyond the perpendicular and is arrested in that position by the projection 11. at the'lower end of the hook catching on the shoulder m in the chamber 01 the draw-head. In order to prevent the hook G from falling forward before it is acted on by the rod 0 there is a counterbalancing projection,f, immediately behind the hook. By this arrangement the hook is kept steadily in its place until the cars arein position to be coupled.
The advantage we claim for our coupler is that the hook is always in a position to be acted on by the operator taking his place on the platform of the car and avoiding the dan ger of getting between the cars under any circumstances.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
- A projection at the eye of the hook to prevent it from falling entirely back, so that it will couple in any position.
ALPHEUS A. LUSK. SAMUEL A. WELLS.
