Description
L. DILL.
Car-Couplings.
NO 57,0. Paten-ted Nov. 24,1874.
Winx/sai @MW/w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO DILL, OF GREENVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,066, dated November 24, 1874; application filed August 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LORENZO DILL, of Greenville, in the county' of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that, the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
A A represent the draw-heads, with an excavation for the reception of the head of the coupling-bar D, which is used only when both draw-heads are of this pattern. The link G, Fig. 5, may be used when one of the drawheads is of the ordinary pattern, and the bar H, Fig. 4, may be used next to the locomotive. The coupling-pin O is held in place by the hasp B, fitting over a wrist cut upon the end of the pin.
When set for coupling, as in Fig. 2, the bar D is thrown in place by the shock of the cars coming together, the falling of lthe bar being rendered sure by the swinging lever E, Fig. 3, moving against it. This lever E is fastened to the body of the car by a screw-ring, F.
Figure l shows the coupling e'ected. Fig. 2 shows it in position for coupling.
I do not claim the swing-bar of the construction shown in the device of Freeman, patented August 3, 1868.
I claim as my inventionrlhe combination of the coupling-bar D, the pivoted and forked swing-bar E, and the drawhead A, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own'invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LORENZO DILL.
Witnesses C. C. SATER, Guns. G. MATCEETT.
