Description

H A CASE GAR COUPLING.
(No Model.)
No. 426,107. Patented Apr. 22, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
IIIRAM A. CASE, OF TROY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE E. BRADFORD, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,107, dated. April 22, 1890.
Application filed February 19, 1890. Serial No. 341,026. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
be it known that I, IIIRAM A. CASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make a car-coupler which may be easily and safely operated by a brakeman from the sides of a car, either to couple or uneouple, and which may be applied to the ordinary drawhead by providing the latter with a hole and a straight hook. The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of the bottom of car-frame; Fig. 2, a longitudinal Vertical section on the dotted line 00 a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a vertical cross-section on line y y of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the car-frame, provided with beams (a a, which project in front and are made with the bearing B B, in which turns the cross shaft C, having the end arms 0 c and intermediate crank c, all prefably in the same plane.
D is a draw-bar supported in a bearing (Z and provided with a buffer-spring d encircling its rear end and attached at one end to the crossbar a of the car-frame. 011 the end of the draw-bar D in front of the car-frame is an upwardly-extending projection nearly at right angles to the bar, and which I term the hook I). This construction of the hook will cause the car to uncouple automatically from a car which goes off the track or over an embankment.
E is a coupling-link made fast to a pivot F, which passes loosely through a cross-hole (Z in the draw-bar and turns therein. This headed pivot F is threaded at its end to receive a nut F, and has an arm G fast thereon. This arm G has a cross-slot g, in which is arranged the crank c, and an end hole g, in which engages the hook it of acoiled spring H, whose rear end is connected by a loop h with a staple 1 on the cross-bar a.
\Vhen a brakeman turns one of the arms which are on the ends of the shaft 0 toward the front, the link E may be lifted to a vertieal position, and when the two cars which are to be coupled together contact it is let go. The spring II will then bring the link down over the hook of the opposite car and there hold it firmly in place, so that as long as the car in front and rear of it remain 011 the track no uncoupling can possibly take place. As the shaft 0 turns, its crank acts upon the arm G, which turns the pivot F, and in conse quence thereof also the link E.
What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The turn-pivot F, provided with a link E and a slotted arm G, made fast thereto and at an angle to each other, in combination with the rear coil-spring II and crankshaft C, the lat ter having end arms 0 c in the same plane with the crank c, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IIIRAM A. CASE. \Vitnesses: I
II. C. CARPENTER, FRANK C. FERGUSON.
