Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JOHN M. SUTTON, OF SUTTONS CORNERS, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT |N cAR-couPLlNes.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,87 9, dated March 18, 1873.
road cars without the assistance of the brakeman, thereby avoiding t-he danger incident thereto.
The drawing represents [ny invention.
A is the draw-head, constructed in the usual form. On the top of the draw-head are two lugs or ears, one of which is shown at S. The otheris on the other side of the dog E. The dog E is placed between the lugs s and a square hole therein, through which a pin, D, or bolt passes, on the out end of which is the lever O. The lower part of this dog E passes down through a slot in the top of the drawhead A so as to form a triangle, as shown by the dotted lines at G. F is a coupling-pin, hung on the dog E by a pin or bolt, 0. m n is the couplinglink, with a bridge, H, across its center. its place.
The operation of my invention is as follows, to-wit: If the end u of the coupling-link isattaclied to one car, and is by it pushed into the draw-head, the end of the link m will strike the part G of the Vdog E, forcing it back and dropping the pin F down through the link lml into the hole X in the lower side of the draw head, and at the same time throwing the lever O forward until the weight B is past the cen ter of motion D, thereby retaining the pin F in its position and securely coupling the cars. When the bridge H hits the pin it prevents the link going in any further.
What I claim as my invention is as follows, to wit:
The dog E, constructed as described, in combination with the pin F, the lever C, and the link m u, for the purposes set forth. a
JOHN MILLER SUTTON.
B is a weight to keep the lever in Witnesses:
A. B. RICHMOND, ROE REIsINGER.
