Description
A. C. ,FELL. Improvement in Railway Car Couplings.
N0\124,430. P tented March12, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS O. FELL, OF CALEDONIA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY-CAR COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,430, dated March 12, 1872; antedated February 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Arms 0. FELL, of Galedonia, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Ohio, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Coupling; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a car-coupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- ,Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
A represents the draw-head or bumper, provided in its top with an elongated slot running longitudinally with the draw-head, and in its bottom with a square mortise. B represents the coupling-hook, constructed as shown in Fig. 1, and passing through the slot in the top of the draw-bar. The front end forms the hook a, which rests upon the bottom of the draw a tenon, d, with shoulders on all four sides, said tenon passing through a slot in the front end of a spring, 0, the rear end of which is secured on the top of the draw-head. This spring holds the coupling-hook down in its place, and prevents it from jumping up by the motion of the cars. The front side of the hook at is beveled, as shown, so that in coupling the cars the coupling-link D will strike said beveled surface, and raise the entire coupling-hook B upwards, and as soon as the link has cleared the hook to the springO throws it down in position, holding the link. The uncoupling of the cars may be effected from the platform or other part of the car by means of rods or chains attached to the tenon d on top of the couplinghook.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pin B having a straight projection, b, and inclined hook at, whether held down by a spring or its own weight, and adapted to receive and hold the common link between a and b, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of June, 1871.
AMOS O. FELL.
Witnesses J. G. UNDERWOOD, L. H. OLDFIELD.
