' U. SNYDER.
GAR GOUPLING.
Ne. 431,723.v Petented July' 8, 1890.
UNiTn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.ULIDES SNYDER, OF LOUISVILLE, OI-IIO.
CAR-COUPLIN'G.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,728, dated July 8` 1890.
d Application filed May 16 1890. Serial No. 352,023. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ULIDES SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Car-Couplin gs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is an isometrical view showing the link properly attached to the draw-head.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a draw-head,
showing the coupling-pin placed in position to be received through the link. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the gravity-block. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the pivoted catch-bar.
The present invention has relation to carcouplings; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the accom pan yingdrawings, A represents the draw-head, which is attached to the carin the ordinary manner. To the front or forward end of the draw-head A is pivotally attached the catch-bar B,which is substantially of the form shown in 4, and, as shown, it
is provided with the partition or connectingbar a, which is for the purpose of holding the pin C in an elevated position, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The gravity-block is located within the draw-head, and is held in the desired position by means of the extensions D and E. The extension E is located substantially O is placed in the position shown in Fig. 2, 5o and as the catch-bar B is elevated at its free end the pin O will be thrown from its restingplace and fall through the link and the aperture c, thereby properly coupling the drawheads together. To the catch-bar B is attached the rod d, which extends up through the draw-head, and is for the purpose of adjusting the link G up or down at its free end by elevating the catch-bar B' and removing the pressure of said catch-bar from the inner end of the link. It will be understood that by resting the front or forward ends of the gravity-block F on the free ends of the catchbar B the front or forward end or portion of said gravity-block will be elevated as the catch-barv B is elevated by the link, and atsaine time said gravity-block will not interfere withthe movements of said catch-bar B., It will be also understood that if desired the operating-rod CZ may extend upward to the top of cars, thereby enabling a brakeman to guide the link G into the draw-head, thereby preventing the necessity of entering between the cars to make a coupling.
Having fully described my invention, whaha-5.
I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the draw head A, having pivotally attached thereto the catchbar B, provided with the partition a, the gravity-block F, located within the draw-head, the extensions D and E, the pin C, and the link G, substantially as and for the purpose specitied. l
2. The combination of the draw -head A, S5 having pivotalgy attached thereto the catchbar B, the rod d, attached to said catch-bar, the gravity-block F, and the pin C, and the link G', substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed mynaine inthe presence of two witnesses.
ULIDES SNYDER.
