messes.
Application filed March 30, 1914.
T aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mason B. GriBnRsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing Devices for RailwayCar-Coupler Pivot- Pins, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 5
The invention relates to car couplers of the J anney type and it is the object of the provide a simple construction by which the pivot pin is held from accidental disengagement.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a car coupler showing my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the retaining lugs; and Fig. 3 is a section on line ir-x Fig. 2.
I'Vith the car couplers of the type above referred to the coupling hook or knuckle is secured to the coupler head by a pivot pin, the latter being usually inserted from the top and being provided with a head for retaining it in position. It frequently happens, however, that the pin is broken, which permits the portion below the brake to drop out. With the present invention this result is prevented by a device which effectually locks the pin from disengagement, while the locking device itself is retainedin position by the pin.
In detail, A is the coupler head, B the hook or knuckle, and C the headed pin, all of usual construction.
D is the cotter-pin which passes through an aperture in the pivot pin below the coupler head to prevent it from jumping upward, this also being of usual construction. Upon opposite sides of the coupler pin C are depending lugs E, preferably formed inte gral with the coupler head. These lugs are Specification of Letters Patent.

provided with recesses F on their inner sides adapted to receive a retaining pin G- which eXtends across the space between said lugs immediately below the pivot pin 0. The pin G is insertible into the recesses B through entrance slots H formed in the up per portion of the lugs E. These entrance slots are so positioned that when the pivot pin C is in normal position and held therein by the cotter-pin D, the pin G will be held at the bottom of the recesses F and will be prevented from disengagement through the entrance slots H. Thus the pin 6: retains the pin C, while the pin C retains the pin G. As a consequence the coupler pin can not hecome accidentally disen aged, but at any time when the cotter-pin D is withdrawn and the pin C lifted the pin G may be readily detached.
WV hat I claim as my invention is In a car coupler, the combination with a coupler head and knuckle pin, of a pair of lugs projecting downward from said head on opposite sides of said pin, said lugs having longitudinal recesses in their inner faces closed at the lower ends and provided with laterally opening entrance slots at their upper ends extending at right angles said recesses, and a cross pin engageable and disengageable with said recesses through said entrance slots only when said knuckle pin is removed, said. cross pin norms l; resting at the bottom of said recesses forming a stop for said knuckle pin and being prevented from jumping out by said knuckle pin and the right angle turn in said entrance slots.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
