Description

c. 0. WHEELER.
Car Coupling. No. 54,237. Patented Apr. 24.1866.
AM. PHOTO-1110.60. N .Y.(OSBORNE'S PROCESS.)
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
O. 0. WHEELER, OF MATTESON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,237, dated April 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, G. 0. WHEELER, of Matteson, Oook county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gar-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a transverse section of my invention, taken in the line 00 m, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same, partly in section, as indicated by the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved car-coupling of that class which are self-connecting or self-acting; and it consists in providing the draw-heads with books, pins, and springs, arranged in such a manner that the draw-heads of two adjoining cars will engage or connect themselves on coming in contact, and without the possibility of being casually detached, and at the same time admitof being readily disconnected whenever required.
A represents the draw-heads of two adjoining cars, which may be applied or attached to the cars in the usual or in any proper manner, said draw-heads each having a central opening, a, with a vertical pin-hole, b, to admit of the ordinary shackle and draw-pins being used whenever occasion requires. The draw-heads may be of cast-iron, and they are cast with two lugs or projections, c c, at each side to form recesses d d. In the right-hand recess d of each draw-head there is secured by a vertical pin, 0, the inner end of a hook, B, and the other recesses, 61, have pins 0 passing vertically through them, on which pins the hooks B catch when the draw-heads come in contact and form the connection between the two cars. In the recessesdthere are springs D, which bear against the inner ends of the hooks and have a tendency to keep the hooks engaged with the pins 0, and the outer ends of the hooks B are beveled at one side, as shown at f, toadmit of the hooks catching over the pins as the draw-heads come in contact. This will be fully understood by referring to Fig. 2. In order to disconnect the draw-heads the pins G are raised.
This coupling may be constructed at amoderate cost. It contains no parts liable to get out of repair. The ordinary shackle and drawpins may be used in case of the breaking of a hook, B, or its casual detachment from its draw-head, and it will couple with certainty.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hooks B B, arranged with the springs D, in combination with the draw-pins C, said parts being applied to the draw-heads having central extra mouths a, and all arranged substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein set forth.
o. 0. WHEELER. Witnesses:

D. L. HoBLEN.
