Description

J. H. HILLS.
Car Coupling. No. 38,225. Patented Apr. 21, 1863.
[4623265565 Illyeniar UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. HILLS, OF BURLINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,225, dated April 21, 1863; antedated March 24, 1862. I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. HILLS, of Burlington, in the county of Uhittenden and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful machine for coupling cars and other uses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a section of said coupler, showing the interior thereof 5 Fig. 2, another sec tion thereof, showin g cavities or openings for the link which connects the couplers, and for the tumbler or wheel which, when the arm thereof is in a horizontal position, holds the link in its place, and when the arm is raised to a perpendicular position permits the link to escape and thus disconnects the coupler; and Fig. 3, the tumbler or wheel aforesaid, with the arm thereof.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make my coupler of iron or other suitable 1 metal, of any desirable size, with a cavity or into the coupler by pushing it against the tumbler, which strikes the tumbler at point e,
as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and turns the tumbler, raising the arm thereof upward until the link passes into the lower end of the cavity fitted therefor, as shown at points f in Fig. 1, when the weight of the arm thereof throws the tumbler back to its place and forms a catch, holding the link in its place.
The tumbler and arm may be so constructed and adjusted that the arm maybe dropped into a cavity or opening made for it in the top of the coupler, instead of resting upon it, or the tumbler may be operated with a spring, properly adjusted, in which case the arm would be dispensed with.
The benefit of my coupler over those in common use is that the link is pushed into its place and held there by the tumbler, and when it becomes necessary to disconnect the coupler to detach a car from the train by raising the arm of the tumbler far enough to permit the link to pass by'points e in Figs. 1 and 3 the disconnection takes place. I deem this of great benefit when it becomes necessary to disconnect cars while running on a strain.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of a coupler with cavities or openings at and I) in Fig. 2, and tumbler c in Figs. 1 and 3, combined with linkfin Fig. 1, substantially in the manner and for the purpose above set forth.
Burlington, August 28, 1861.
JAS. H. HILLS.
