UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY FAKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14,085, dated September 6, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY FAKE, of Ohicago, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Oar- Coupling; and I do hereby-declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to. make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side sectional view of my invention, taken in theline .00 00, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the line 2 2, Fig. 1. I
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to obtain a car-coupling by which the danger of coupling by hand will' be avoided, and one which will accommodate itself to all variations in the track-that is to say, admit ofworking or playing both horizontally and vertically under the movement of the ears as the latter pass over the track or rails.
I construct the draw-head A of cast or wrought iron. The former material will probably be used. It may be of the usual form with open sides, and is provided at its rear with two lugs, to a, to which wroughtiron straps are riveted, having between them a spring arranged in the ordinary or any proper manner. On the inner sides ofthe top and bottom plates of the draw-head there are conical projections B B, one on each. These projections may be ,cast with the plates, and they are in line with each other, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and cored out to admit ofa pin, (1, passing through them.
D D represent two bars, which are placed one on the top of the other, and through which the pin 0 passes, the bars I) D being between the projections B B, and the ends of the lat- -ter being convex, as shown at'b, to admit of the bars I) D having a vertical play or movement, the holes a in said bars being also of conical form to further that end. (SeeFig. 1.) The bars D D are made in hook form at d d in Fig. 2, so that they may grasp the pin in the draw-head of an adjoining car, and the rear ends of the bars D D are fitted between sliding bars E E, which work on parallel rods F F, placed horizontally in the back part of the draw-head. Between these bars E E and the sides of the draw-head there are spiral springs G G, which have a tendency to keep the bars E E toward each other and the inner edges of the hooks d at slightly overlapped, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. j
H II are two parallel sliding bars, which are fitted on rods I I, placed vertically in the rear of the draw-head, and having spiral springs J between them and the top and bottom plates of the draw-head. The springs J have a toad ency to keep the bars H H pressed toward each other, and both pairs of springs, G J, have a tendency to keep the bars D D in a central position in the draw-head, both as regards a vertical and horizontal direction, while at the same time they admit of said bars D D working or playing vertically and horizontally under the side surging and vertical movement of the cars as the latter pass over the track or rails.
The springs G G admit of the hooks being forced apart to receive a pin of the draw-head of an adjoining car, and cause said hooks to grasp or engage the pin when the latter is within the hooks. The outer edges of the hooks d d are beveled in order that the pin of the adjoining draw-head may force them apart when brought in contact with them.
1 would remark that my invention may be used with the ordinary draw-head and coupling-pin on one car. In case my improvement is applied to both cars a coupling-pin may be inserted in the holes a" at the front part of my draw-head, the bars D D being removed.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The two bars D D, provided with books (1 cl at their outer ends, and fitted within the draw-head A on the pin 0, between the projections B B, in .combination with the springs G G J J and the sliding bars E E H H, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
HENRY FAKE. Witnesses:
A. J. BROWN, HENRY D. NIGIITINGALE.
