IMPROVED GAR-COUPLING.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, OSCAR J. WHITNEY, of Clifton Spring, county of Ontario, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2, a transverse section; and
Figure 3, a longitudinal section.
A A represent an ordinary draw-head; B the pin. C is a rest for assisting the holding of the'pin B in its place while the ears are uncoupled. E is a recess made in the front side of the rest C.
The object of this invention is to furnish a cheap and simple device which may be applied to any of the ordinary draw-heads of railroad-cars, for the purpose of holding up the pin while cars are uncoupled, and which will also allow the pin to drop through the link and couple the ears whenever the draw-heads are brought together. These ends I accomplish by means of the rest 0 and the recess E. The rest C is an elevation sufiiciently high to hold the pin at a proper slant when it is set in o the recess E. The rest may be apart of the draw-head, made solid, or it may be made separate and fastened to the draw-headby bolts. It should be about one-third as high as the length of the pin, and the recess E should be about half an inch deep, measuring from the circumference of the pin-hole, and should be located in front of the hole. To avoid going between the cars for coupling, it is only necessary to raise the pin and'let the end rest on the bottom of the reeess E, and when the cars are brought together the concussion will throw the pin out of the recess, and it will drop by its own weight through the link. 7
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Constructing the draw-head ofa railway-car with a recess, E, in front of the hole through which the pin passes, and with an elevation, C, to sustain the pin B in an inclined position above the chamber into which the link enters, said draw-head being arranged to operate in connection with the ordinary pin B, substantially as set forth.
OSCAR J. WHITNEY.
