Description

HARDS su HODNETT] Car Coupling. N0106,057 Patented Aug 2, 1870.
NFETERS, EHOTO-LJTPIOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D, CA
1 ,Toall lwhom it 'may concern `Be it known that we, J onsr B. Hanns 'and WIL- immagine fut/ent (Milice VJOHN B. Hanns AND WILLIAM HoDNnjrT, or oHIoAGO. LLlNoIs.
Letters Patent No. .106,0574', dated August 2, 1870.
IMPRQVEIWENT IN C AR-CUQPLING.
The Schedule referred to in these, Letters atent and marking part of the same .MAM HODNE'T, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CarSelf-Couplers; l
andl we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being `had to theaecompanying drawing making part of this' speeiicatipn, and -to' the, letters of reference p marked thereon,like letters` indicatinglike parts wher- `ever they occur. A
To enable otherssklled in the art `to construct and use our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
'lhenaturc of our `invention consists in a slidingA coupler when the car is uncouplcd;
Figure 2l represents a longitudinal section of the con )ler when the car is coupled with another ea'r;
igure 3 represents a side elevation of' the im proved link; land y Figure 4, the end eleration of the same, d B is a draw-bar.
B is a sliding head, of the shape as represented,
` and level or slightlyronnded on the top and at the botf tom, and moving between the stops b and b', aixedlto the draw-bar.4 l y Y The head B isY connected by` a rod or plate, C, with l 's the lower point-of the segmentV D, which is journaled i t at point ll to the draw-banned moving' in a suitable' f slot made inthe said draw-bar. Eis a'collar' made around the opening O of the -and fulcrnmed tothe side or top of the car.
as pill l is s'niiciently raised so as to clear the sliding,rv
draw-bar, for the purpose of keepinglthe coupling-pin l in a vertical position when the car is uncoupled.
The operation of the device consists in this, that when the car is nnconpled the pin I stands in veltical position, resting on the top of the slidinghead B,l but when linkL of the other car strikes at the head B, and pushes it backward, the pin I drops down, and the coupling is effected.
To uncouple the cars, thepin P is raised bya man, by means of a. lever suitably connected'with pin 1, As soon head D', this is'pushed forward', by the weight of the lsegment D, under the pin, and supports the same.
'In order to keep the ,link L always in a horizontal position when the car is not coupled, a lever, F, is affixed to the draw-bar, at the point f, on a pivot; itis made heavier at the forward end e, and its hind end e' is so shaped that when-pin-P drops down it presses this end e' and raises the end e against link L, thus supporting it and keeping it horizontal; but when the caris uneonpled and the pin 1 raised,v 'the front end e of thelever drops down into a suitable crease or groove made for it in the dra'\vbar.v
We attain the same object,viz., the .keepingl of the link in. a horizontal position', also, byproviding the said link L on one side with braces t 1,said braces ,so
shaped as to fit the interior crvatures of the draw-- bars, the side, provided with braces, being used as' theunder side ofthe said link. Having thus fullydescribedour invention,
VWhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi The draw-head A, provided with the stops b and b', and having the slidingr head B- and segment D connectedfby a rod, C, arranged'therein as herein de'l scribed.
' JOHN B. HARDS. y Witnesses: WILLIAM HODNETT. J. B. TURGHIN,
- ALBERT GRAFIELD.
