TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Glssmenmof Lawrenceville, in thev county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in Car-Couplings," and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a pivoted butter, provided with a link-opening, pinopening, and a locking pla'te and pin, said bufler being used in combination with springs, levers, and a chain, the whole being constructed, arranged, combined, and operating in the manner hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and 'use my'invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specifieation Figure 1 represents a section of car-truck inverted, and provided with my improvement in couplings.
Figure 2 represents an end elevation of the same.
In the drawings, A. represents the bufi'er, which is pivoted at the point marked e, and is. provided with a plate, R, which is used for the purpose of preventing the buffer from becoming uncoupled by any up or down motion of the cars or couplings. The locking-pinfis held out in the position represented in fig. 1 by means of a spiral spring placed in a recess madein the bumper. O represents the opening or slot made in the buficr for receiving the ordinary coupling-link. 2 represents an'opening for the coupling-pin. These openings are used for coupling with cars which are not provided with my improved coupling. The spiral spring n is used for the purpose of holding the buffer in a straight line with the plane of the cars. To the butter A is attached a lever, r, towhich is connected a chain, m, which is attached to the ordinary hand-lever g. The front end of the bufi'er A is bevelled oil and provided with a recess, marked 3. This bevelling off and reccssing forms the hook it of the butter. The buffer A is pivoted to the coupling-bar B, which is held in the proper position by means of the support 0, which is attached to the bottom of the ear, and is prevented from drooping or sinking below the point desired by the cross-bar X'of the car-truck. To the car-coupling bar B is attached a spiral spring, 8, the back end of which is secured to the bottom of the ear. The spiral spring sis used for the purpose of twisting or throwing back the coupling to its proper position after being turned for the purpose of uncoupling the cars. The block marked X is used for the purpose of preventing the spring s-from turning the coupling beyond the desired point. I
As the construction, arrangement, and the relation the several parts of my improved coupling hear to.
each other will readily be understood by the skillful mechanic, by reference to the accompanying drawings, I will therefore, without further description of its construction, proceed to describe its operation.
Having cars provided with my improved coupling, constructed and arranged substantially as herein described and represented, the cars are forced together in the usual manner, which will cause'the bufi'ers A to turn sidewise on their pivots e, and force back the pinf, so that their hooks t will be forced into the recesses 3 by means of the springs n. The pin f,wi1l then be forced out and the-cars will be securely coupled and locked together. The cars are uncoupled by turning the hand-lever g, which will wind up the chain m, which will turn the coupling so as to disconnect the cars.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improved car-coupling, 'what I claim as of my invention, is v The pivoted bufler A, provided with a link-opening, O, pin-opening 2, plate R, and locking-pinf, when used in combination with levers g and 1', chain 112, and springs 91- and s, constructed, arranged, and operatingsubstam tially as herein described and for the purpose set forth. I
Witness my hand this 17th day of August, 1867.
