CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,410, dated November 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE HARDY, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Oouplin gs, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is an end view showing a portion of a car provided with my improved coupling; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section showing` the method of mounting the draw-bar, and Fig. 3 an elevation showing the coupler-heads locked.
Like letters and iigures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different iigures of the drawings.
My invention relates to automatic car-couplers; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the body of thecar, which is of the ordinary form and construction, and B the draw-bar. The inner end of the draw-bar is cushioned by a spring d, mounted in a box f in the usual manner. A block g is secured centrally to the end of the car, and the draw-baris iitted to slide longitudinally therein. Said draw-bar is provided with a longitudinal spline h, which works in an arc=shaped recess in the block g and limits the rotation of said bar.
A torsionspringj is wound around the drawbar B and has one end secured -thereto at lo. A sleeve m is mounted on the draw-bar at the rear of the block g, and a lever-arm p is secured to said sleeve. A chain q has one end secured to said lever and passes over a pulley g' on the carbody. From thence it passes to the top of said car, where it is provided with a ring or handle t. The chain o is. secured tc the chain q, and is provided with a ring w, suspended on a hook :r at the bottom of the car. ward from the sleeve m, and a chain 16 leads therefrom to the opposite side of the car, where it is provided with a handle or ring 17.
The draw-bars B are provided with a head 25, projecting at right angles to the body of said bar. The outer edge of said head is beveled rearwardly and laterally at 26.
In the use of my improvement when the cars come together the beveled edges of the heads 25 of the draw-bars engage. This causes said bars to rotate slightly, winding up the springs j. As the cars come closer together, the heads 25 pass each other, and when out of contact are quickly thrown inward by the Y action of said springs, overlapping each other, as shown in Fig. 3, and securely coupling the cars together. By means of the levers p 15 and chains 16 q the draw-bars B may readily be rotated from the side or top of the car sufciently to disengage the draw-bar heads 25 and uncouple the cars when desired.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. A In a carcoupling, the combination of a spring-cushioned draw-bar provided with a beveled laterally-projecting drawhead and with a longitudinal spline, a ixed block attached to the carbod'y, provided with a bearing for said draw-bar and with an arc-shaped recess, in which said spline has a limited oscillating movement, a torsional spring connected with said draw-bar, a sleeve on said draw-bar provided with a longitudinal groove for receiving said spline, and a laterally-projecting arm attached to said sleeve for oscillating said sleeve and bar.

In a carcoupling, the combination of a spring-cushioned draw-bar provided with a beveled laterallyfprojecting draw-head and with a longitudinal spline, a fixed block attached to the car-body, provided with a bear ing for said draw-bar and with an arc-shaped recess, in which said spline has a limited oscillating movement, a torsional spring coni nected with said drawbar, a sleeve on said drawfbar provided with a longitudinal groove for receiving said spline, a laterally-projecta ing arm attached to said sleeve for oscillating A lever 15 projects down IOO said sleeve and barjand a chain connected to said arm for actuating it. 3. `In a car-coupling, the combination of a spring-cushioned draw-bar provided With a beveled laterally-projecting draw-head and with a longitudinal spline,.a fixedV block attached to the car-body, provided With a bearingfor said draw-bar and with an arc-shaped recess, in which said spline has a limited oscillating movement, a torsional spring connected with said draw-bar, a sleeve on said draw-bar provided with a longitudinal groove for receiving said spline, arms projecting laterally from said sleeve in opposite directions, a chain connected with one of. said arms and leading `to one side ofV the car, and a chain connected tothe other arm, leading to the op-V posite sideof the car.
4. In a'carfcoupling, the combination yof a spring-cushioned .draw-bar provided With a beveled laterally-projecting draw-head and with a longitudinal spline, a fixed block attached to the car-body, provided With a bearing for said draw-bar and with an arcshaped recess, in which said spline has a limited oscillating movement, a torsional spring connected with said draw-bar, a sleeve on said draw-bar provided with a longitudinal groove for receiving said spline, arms attached to said sleeve and projecting laterally therefrom in opposite directions, a chain connected to one of said arms and extending to one side of the car and then to the top thereof, guides for said chain, and a chain connected to the other arm and extending to the opposite side of the car.
