To AL`L WHOM ITMAY coNoERN: l
l Beit known that I, THOMAS M. MOORE, of Newton, county of -Sussemantl State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Gouplingsg and -do hereby declare that the-following yis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of `reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists the construction of the car-coupling in suclra manner that it may be easily and 'readily detached from theear whenever so desired; for instance, when one car is thrown from the track. y I
The front` portion of my car-coupling, together vwith the coupling-link and pin, is of the usual and ordinary construction. The connectionof the coupling to the car is such that it cannot be disengaged from'the car unlesslit is twisted partially around, as will be described.
In the annexed drawings, z' represents the front of the coupler, in the rear of which is the usual recess', lwithin which the link lies, where it 'is secured by the pin t'.I i
The forwardend 'of the coupling is rounded at the sids, (as seen in Figure 2,) from therear ofvhch, at
the-centre,e'xt'ends a metal plate, d, which is placed vertically, and is provided with a notch on its upper and .lower sides. This plate is' passed'into aslidingtetal hox'j, vwhich is secured on the under side ofthe cur by keepcrs,. or in any other suitable manner.,
The box j is open at each side'and at its front end, at which latterpoint there are twolugs or projections, e c, that tinto the notches in the plated. Within the box j there isa pivoted plate,'f, fig. 2, having a. suitable slot, and into ywhich passes the end of theA plate df Around thisl pivoted platcis a hoop-spring, 7:,'that keepsit in position. 'i l From the rear of the box isa rod, having a rubber spring, a, so that whenever the sliding box is forced to the rear by the opposite car, thisspring will'throw the coupler back into position.
l It willbe seen that whenever the coupling is-draivn'too far on either side, the plate will be released v from the projections-c ein thebox j, and can be extracted from'tlie car.' Asthe same is partially turned, 'the platef turns upon its pivot, and as the pressure is withdrawn, thefspring c`uill carry the same in its proper place again.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letterslatent, is-
The arrangement of the notched plate d onthe rear of the head im, in combination with-the sliding box j, with its projections c c, and interior pivoted platef, and spring It, all constructed and operating-substantially as specified. v`'.LHOIVIAS M. MOORE Witnesses:
JNO. LINN,
E. C. MooRE.
