To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM P. STEWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachment-Holders for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has for its object to provide an efficient sewing-machine attachmentholder by means of which various kinds of sewing-machine attachments may be readily secured in operative position on sewing-machines and which is of such construction that the attachments may be readily and conveniently removed from the machines when desired. To' this end the presser-foot of the machine is provided at one side with a horizontal groove or recess eXtendinglengthwise of the presser-foot, or from front to rear in the direction of the feed of the work, said groove or recess having its bottom Wall above the bottom of said foot and being crossed vertically by apin or stop. The attachment is provided with a forwardly-extendin g tongue closely fitting said groove or recess in the presser-foot between said pin or stop and the inner wall of said groove or recess, said tongue being preferably slightly Wedgeformed or tapering, so that the attachment will be'securely held in place by a wedging fit of said tongue between said inner wall of said groove or recess and said pin or stop. The attachment may, if desired, be provided with a spring-catch having a shoulder to engage a shoulder or part of the presser-foot to positively lock the attachment in working position.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing a hemmer secured to a presser-foot by meansof the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the presser-foot. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the attachment provided with a springcatch locking device.

Referring to the drawings, a denotes 'a sewing-machine presser-foot provided at one side with a horizontal groove or recess I), extending lengthwise or from front to rear of said presser-foot. Crossing the groove or recess 1), near the outer side thereof, is a stop or pin 0. The shank d of the attachment 6 (in the present case a hemmer) is furnished with a forwardly-extending tongue f, entering said groove or recess in the presser-foot and of such a Width as to fit closely between the inner wall of the groove or recess 1) and the said stop or pin a, said tongue having preferably a slightly-inclined outer side for engagement with said stopor pin, thus making the said tongue slightly tapering forwardly, so that the attachment will be securely held in place by a wedging action, as will be readily understood from Fig. 1.

With such attachments as hemmers, binders, corders, and guides, which do not have any moving operating parts and in the use of which the draft or forward movement of the work' will have a tendency to tighten the wedging holding action ofthe tongue in the presser-foot, the attachments will usually be reliably retained in working position by frictional action alone; but to entirely safeguard the. frictional hold of the tongue on the presser-foot the kinds of attachments referred to may each be provided with a springcatch, as g, having a shoulder or portion, as h, arranged to engage any suitable shoulder or portion (as the heel part 71) of the presserfoot, and thus positively lock the attachment in place. This spring-catch is, however, more particularly advantageous for use in connection with such attachments as ruffiers and tuck-creasers having moving parts and in the operation of which the attachments might work loose if not thus positively locked in place. j

The attachment, in either of its forms herein shown and described, may be readily removed from the machine presser-foot by the force of a slight pull, as will be understood, the spring-catch (when such is employed) being first lifted or released from its holdingshoulder on the presser-foot.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a sewing-machine prossor-foot having a horizontal groove or recess extending lengthwise or from front to rear thereof, and the bottom wall of which groove or recess is above the bottom of said foot, and said foot having a vertical pin or stop fixed in and crossing said groove or recess, of a sewing-machine attachment having a forwardly-extending tongue closely fitting between a wall of said groove or recess and said pin or stop.

2. The combination with a sewing-machine presser-foot having a horizontal groove or re cess extending lengthwise or from front to rear thereof, and having a vertical pin or stop in said groove or recess, of a sewing-machine attachment having a forwardly-extending tapering tongue closely fitting between a wall of said groove or recess and said pin or stop.

3. The combination with a sewing-machine attachment provided with a tongue, of a presser-foot grooved or recessed for the reception of said tongue, and a spring-catch mounted on the attachment and having a shoulder or portion to engage a part of the said presser-foot to positively lock the attachment to the said presser-foot.

4. The combination with a sewing-machine attachment having a tongue, of a presser-foot having a horizontal groove, a fixed pin crossin g said groove vertically and between which pin and the inner wall of said groove said tongue closely fits, and a spring-catch having a shoulder or portion to engage a part of said presser-foot to lock the attachment to the said presser-foot.
