Description
(Model) t R. W..RIESS. Cutting or'Trimming Attachment for Sewing Machines.
No.- 242,791. Patented June 14,1881.
['4 4. E'IIIIIIIIA D UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
R. WILLIAM RIESS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUTTING OR TRlMMlNG ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,791, dated June 14., 1881.
Application filed February 10, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, R. W. RIEss, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new Improvement in Cutting or Trimming Attachments for Sewing-Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawin gs, forming part of this specification, in which my improvement is fully illustrated.
The present invention relates to an improved attachment for sewing-machines for the purpose of cutting off or trimming the edge of the material or fabric parallel with the seam and performing its work at the same time the stitching or sewing is being done, and is particularly adapted to such work as the seaming up of stockings, hose, or other articles, when it is desirable to trim close to and parallel with the seam. v
Figure l in the drawings is a front eleva tion of the head of a sewing-machine, showing the fixed knife A, its connecting-bracket L, needle H, and needle-bar I; also, the presserfoot B, feeder G, and feed-bar F. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the'same, showing the arm of machine broken off, and having the needle-bar and needle removed, and showing an end view of the feeders G and D, with the beveling or clearance at the under side. Fig. 3 is a view of the knife A, showing its screw-slots and its sloped cutting-edge. Fig. ashows thefeedsurfaces of the feeders O and I), with the angular out teeth out on surface of D. Fig. 5 is a plan or top view of the presser-foot B, showing needle-slot k and knife-slot Z. Fig. 6 is a plan or top view of the feeder-bar F, and showing screw-holes by which the two feeders G and D are attached to the said bar; also, the fork at m. Fig. 7 is an end view of feed-bar F, and shows the bevel or clearance in the fork m. r
The knife A, when in position, stands perpendicular directly back and to the right of the needle H, (the space to the right being equal to the distance it is desired to out or trim from the seam or stitching,) and presses down through the slot Z in the presser-foot B, and also between the two feeders O and D, and is attached to the stationary head of the machine by means of the bracket L.
The object of the second or auxiliary feed the direction of the threads of the fabric thethreads will fall into the grooves, and thus to some extent avoid the pressure of the presserfoot upon them.
The knife A atits lower end or cutting-edge is inclined backward to give a shearing action in cutting.
The feed-bar F is forked at m, for the purpose of giving clearance to cuttings from the knife.
Having thus described my improvement, I will now describe its operation, which is as follows: With the several parts attached and adjusted in their proper positiomas described, we may proceed to sew or stitch the edges of a fabric together in the usual way, and it will be seen thatimmediately the fabric is stitched and carried forward by the feeder, as usual, under the presser-foot, the fabric will come in contact with the knife A, and, being held firmly on either side by feed-surfaces O and D, will be readily out close by and parallel to the stitching, and thus leaveatrue smooth trimmed edge to the work.
The object of beveling or cutting away the under side of the feeders G and D is to prevent theliability of the space becoming filled up with cuttings of the fabric. The sides of the opening in the forked feed bar are also cut away or beveled in the same manner and for the same purpose. f
Having fully described myimproveincnt and its operation, what I claim as my invention,
and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with a stationary cuttingknife, A, of the slotted presser-foot B, and the feed-bar L, having two feed-surfaces, O and D, one of said feed-surfaces being provided with obliquely-arranged grooves or teeth, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
R. WM. RIESS. Witnesses:
EDMUND B. SEYMOUR, WM. F. POTTER.
