Be it known that we, EDWIN J. TOOF and WILLIAM M. AMMERMAN, citizens of the United States, and residents of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachment-Holders for Sewing-Machines, of which the following description, taken in connection with the drawings herewith accompanying, is a specification.

Our invention relates to that class of devices adapted for detachably securing the various attachments used in connection with sewing-machines in their operative position upon the machine, the object of our present invention being to provide such a device or means of cheap and simple construction that will be capable of ready and convenient adjustment to secure the attachment in position or release the same and be so operated without the employment of screws or similar fastening means.

To this end our invention consists in providing the slide-plate of a sewing-1nachine with, first, a suitable bearing-surface to receive the shank or other part of the attachment in contact therewith, and, second, with a suitable locking-lever for acting in combination with said bearing to detachably lock an interposed shank or other part of the attachment between the same and rigidly hold the connected attachment in its operative position.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the slide-plate of a sewing-machine with a hemmer attached thereto, the locking-1e ver being in position for securing the hemmer in its operative position, as shown. Fig. 1 is a vertical section through line 00 00 of Fig. 1, showing the manner of connection between the several parts. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the slide-plate with the hemmer detached, showing the position of the locking-lever when moved to release the attachment. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the hemmer shown in Fig. 1 detached from the slideplate.

To explain in detail, a represents the slideplate of a sewing-machine, which, according to our invention as illustrated in Figs. 1, 1,

serted rib c of the hemmer-shank is adapted to be forced and locked by an engaging camlever b, which latter is pivotally secured to the under side of the slide-plate on that side of the slot to opposite the depending wall a in such position that it may be operated to act upon the plate or rib 0 inserted through the slot to and between it and the wall (L to hold the connected hemmer or other attachment in position upon the slide-plate.

The cam-lever b in the present instance illustrated is formed with one end extending beyond the end of the slide-plate and to a point above the upper surface of the same, as shown at b in Fig. 1, whereby the lever may be conveniently operated to be moved into or from locking engagement with the inserted part of the attachment.

The shank e of the hemmer c rests upon the surface of the slide-plate when its rib c is inserted through the opening in the latter and when secured thereon firmly supports the hemmer in its operative position.

Having thus set forth our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. An attachment-holder for sewing-machines, consisting of a sewing-machine slideplate provided with a slot or opening therein, a projecting wall adjacent to said slot, and with a pivoted lever cooperating with said projecting-wall to engage with the opposite sides of an interposed attachment to clamp and hold the same therebetween.

2. An attachment-holder for sewing-ma chines, consisting of a sewing-machine slideplate provided with a slot or opening therein, a depending wall on its under side adjacent to said slot, and with a pivoted cam-lever on its under side arranged on that side of said slot opposite the depending Wall, whereby it may be operated to act in combination with the iatter to engage with the interposed part of an attachment, and having one end there- 10 attachment when inserted through the slot and clampthe same in a stationary position against one side or wall of the latter, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
