EMANUEL J. BOYLER AND HUBERT M. GREIST, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO THE GREIST MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
SEWING-MACHINE-ATTACHMENT HOLDER.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EMANUEL J. Bor- LER, a citizen of Canada, and Hcnnnr M. GRnIsr, a citizen of the United States, both residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine-Attachment Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a novel construction by means of which a sewing machine attachment, such as a hemmer or binder, may be readily applied to or removed from a sewing machine presser-foot without necessitating the tightening or loosening of a set screw or set nut. To this end the presser-foot of the machine is provided with a clamping rivet which is attached to a spring arm secured to the presser-foot, and which clamping rivet is adapted to slide horizontally in a vertical or shank portion of the presser-foot so that its head may frictionally engage a vertical flange on the shank of the attachment and which flange is provided with a key-hole slot, or a slot having an enlarged portion, for the passage of the head of the said clamping rivet. To steady the attachment on the presser-foot the latter is preferably provided with small studs which are arranged to engage the upper and lower walls of the key-hole slot in the vertical flange portion of the shank of the attachment so as to steady the attachment, held in place by a single clamping rivet, and prevent the same from tilting sidewise.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved attachment-holding device holding a sewing machine hemmer. Fig. 2 is a plan view, Fig. 3 a side view, and Fig. i a rear view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail section on line 55, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the flange portion of the shank of the attachment.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a presser-foot to the vertical or shank portion of which is attached, by a rivet 13, a spring arm 14 carrying a clamping rivet 15 the shank of which extends loosely through the vertical or shank portion of the presser-foot so that it may have a sliding movement therein. A sewing machine attachment,

such as a hennner 16, to be removably secured to the presser-foot, will comprise a shank 17 having a vertical flange part 18 provided with a slot 19 one end of which is enlarged for the passage of the head of the clamping rivet 15, the narrow portion of said slot receiving the shank of said rivet, so that the attachment may be readily applied to the presser-foot by entering the head of the rivet in the enlarged portion of said slot, and then sliding the attachment to the left to bring the narrower portion of the slot into register with the shank of the rivet. To permit of this operation the lower wall of the enlarged portion of the slot is slightly below the lower wall of the narrower portion of the slot, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4. To facilitate the application to or removal of the attachment from the presserfoot the flange part 18 of the shank of the attachment is preferably provided with a projecting lug 20.
In order to steady the attachment on the presser-foot as the latter is held in place by the head of the single clamping rivet 15, the vertical or shank portion of the presser foot is provided with two small studs 21 arranged on opposite sides of the rivet 15, one of said studs being on a higher level than the other so that one will come in cont-act with the upper wall of the narrow portion of the key-hole slot in the flange 18 and the other will come in contact with the lower wall of the said slot, said studs thus serving to steady the attachment in place and prevent the same from tilting sidewise.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the present invention provides means whereby a single spring-pressed clamping rivet and an attachment provided with a single key-hole slot, or a slot having only a single enlarged portion, may be readily applied to or removed from a sewing machine presser-foot, and will be properly held in working position when in use.
The present construction is somewhat simpler than the similar construction shown and described in the application of Emanuel J. Boyler, No. 788,102, filed Feb. 10, 1913, in which two steadying rivets, one of which is a clamping rivet, cooperate with an attachment shank having a vertical flange provided with a double key-hole slot, or a slot having two-enlarged portions.
Having thus described our invention we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a sewing machine presser-foot, of a spring arm attached thereto and provided with a clamping rivet passing through a vertical portion of the shank of the presser-ifoot and a sewing machine attachment having a shank provided with a vertical flange or portion adapted to fit against the vertical shank of the presserfoot, said flange being provided with a single slot having only a single enlarged part for the passage of the head of said clamping rivet.
2. The combination with a sewing ma chine presser-foot, of a spring arm attached thereto and provided with a clamping rivet passing through a vertical portion of the shank of the presser-foot, and a sewing machine attachment having a shank provided with a vertical flange or portion adapted to fit against the vertical shank of the presserfoot, said flange being provided with a single slot having an enlarged part for the passage of the head of said clamping rivet, the shank of said presser-foot being provided on opposite sides of said clamping rivet, with steadying studs adapted to engage the upper and lower walls of the said slot.
In testimony whereof we atfix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
