LAP-SEAM ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 548,212 dated October 22, 1895. Application filed July 2, 1895. Serial No. 554,687. (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. LORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cornish, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap-Seam Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make an attachment to sewing-machines whereby lap-seams may be made on garments without basting the edges of the cloth together, the same to be adjustable to all thicknesses of cloth and all widths of lap.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation, partly in section, showing my attachment applied to the head of a Davis sewing-ma; chine; and Fig. 2, a detail view of the several parts of my invention when detached from one another.
In the drawings, A represents a plate secured by the screw a to the head H of the sewing-machine, and B a wedge held by a clamp-screw b, which is adjustable in the slot or, to bring the stitching more or less distant from the edge of the lap, the lower end of the attachment being thus carried to the right or left.
0 is a metallic plate right-angled at c c c and held to the plate A by the three screws 0 c c, the plate being adjustable up or down for different thicknesses of goods, while D is a subjacent plate held by a screw d in a'slot d, so as to be adjustable to different widths of lap. To the plate D is attached on the under side a spring E, which adjusts itself tothe thickness of the goods, so as to keep the edge thereof from rolling up when the sewingmachine is at work.
F is a right angled piece to be used in the place of the plate D to form a gage for common seaming, so that the edges of the cloth cannot jump, asthey do with ordinary gages.
The whole attachment can be swung up toward the operator and out of the way when not needed for use by loosening the screw which holds the attachment to the head of the machine.
The attachment is fastened to the head of the sewing-machine so that the plate 0 shall be on the right of the plate A, and that the goods will run easily between the lower end of plate A' and the upper side of plate D. The latter is also adjusted to make the lap as wide as is wanted,the goods being held with the right hand so that the edge .will come under the spring E to the lip 01 of the plate D. One piece is held with the left hand so that the edge will come between the plates A D and the wedge B. The edge of the right-hand piece must be kept against the lip of the plate D and the edge of the left-hand piece against the piece 0. Then make the first stitching of the lap, and as soon as the first seam is done swing the lap-seamer toward you and up out of the way. Then stitch another seam as far from the first as the lap is made in stitching a quilter used on all Davis sewingmachines.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-- A lap-seam sewing machine attachment consisting of the plate A slotted at a, the adjustable wedgeB, the plate 0 right-angled at c 0 b the plate D having lip and adjustable bya screw in the slot d and the spring E under plate D, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
