GAGE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,008, dated September 13, 1904.
Application filed June 24, 1904. Serial No. 213,950. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I. MINNIE LEE HOLDER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond clu Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple economical attachments each applicable to a presser-foot of a sewing-machine to accurately gage stitching at various predetermined distances on each side of a slot-seam, plait, ordinary seam, or starting-line of stitching, the employment of such an attachment obviating the necessity of turning the sewed goods from end to end, which if done, as is ordinarily the case when gaging with the presser-foot, said goods have a tendency to draw.
In view of the foregoing said invention consists in what is hereinafter particularly set forth, with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a plan view of a sewing-machine presser-foot having a gage attachment in accordance with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the presser-foot and gage, this View being indicated by lines 2 2 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 8, a plan view of said gage inverted. The scale of the drawings is twice actual size.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates an ordinary sewing-machine presserfoot to which my gage attachment is applicable, and this attachment comprises a recessed plate B, surmounted by a preferably-notched clip C, that is soldered or otherwise secured to said plate. The length of the plate and disposition of the clip thereon is such that said plate projects toward the operator of the sewing-machine when the gage attachment is positioned on the presser-foot of said machine, and this end of the plate is longitudinally recessed to provide a series of prongs Z) c of different widths and distances apart. The prongs .7) are both of the same predetermined width greater than that of the prongs 0, that are also of the same predetermined width, and the rerecess of greatest width being central of the plate. The rear or shank portion of the plate is preferably narrowed, as herein shown, and an aperture (Z, whether recess, slot, or eye, is provided in said plate back of the recess between prongs 0 and in line with the same, said aperture being for the registration with the needle-space between prongs of the presserfoot to which the attachment is applied. The notch in the clip C is also registrable with the needle-space in the presser-foot, and this foot is caught between said clip and the underlying plate.
In practice the distance of stitch-line from a seam, plait, or previous stitch-line on either side of same is variable accordingly as either longitudinal edge of a prong b or c is utilized as the gage, and the attachment herein shown when of proper size is designed for gaging distances of one-sixteenth, one-eighth, onequarter, and one-half of one inch.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An attachment for a sewing machine presser-foot, the same consisting of a forwardly-forked plate provided with needle clearance-space registrable with that of the presser-foot and having its forward prongs of different widths and distances apart, and a clip surmounting the plate rigid therewith, there being two prongs of equal width equidistant from the center of said plate and of like distance from the wider prongs.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
MINNIE LEE HOLDERMAN.
