CALVIN P. WEAVER, OF BLOOMSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
LEAF-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,410, dated July 8, 1902.
Application filed July 11 1901- Serial No. 67,923.
To (tZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN P. WEAVER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomsburg, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Leaf-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to leaf-holders, andis particularly adapted for holding music, 850.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a cheap, durable, and efficient device which may be readily applied to and removed from a table, bookmest, or other suitable support.
A further object is to provide a spring-arm to bear against the leaf and to so construct the arm from a single piece of wire that the spring will not become weak and that the desired tension may be provided in more than one direction.
The peculiar manner of constructing the invention, as well as the manner in which it is applied, will be fully described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a leaf-holder constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the clip. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the clampingplate.
In carrying out my invention I provide a clip 1 of suitable material and which is approximately U-shaped. The lower parallel arm of this clip is cut away toform two diametrically oppositely projecting pins 2 and 3. A clamping-plate 4 is provided at one of its ends with two projections 5 and 6, which are bent upon themselves to form barrels, which pass around the pins 2 and 3 in the form of a hinge. This plate isdesigned to rest normally upon the upper face of the lower arm and may be actuated by a setscrew 7, which passes through the lower arm of the clip.
In order to provide against scratching the table or other support to which the holder is applied, I arrange a packing 8 of resilient material in the form of alining within the clip, so that when said clip is slipped over the edge of the support the same may be securely fastened thereto by operating the screw 7 and a firm attachment made.
(No model.)
Projecting from the upper arm of the clip 1 is an arm or standard 9, comprising a single piece of spring-wire bent near its base in the form of a coil 10 around a pin 11. Immediately above the coil 10 and at right angles thereto is a second coil of larger dimensions, which I designate by the reference-numeral 12. The end of the wire 9 is then carried up a sufficient distance and terminates in a fanciful knob or end 13. By reason of the fact that the coils 10 and 12 are arranged at approximately right angles to each other a certain amount of rigidity is imparted to the arm 9 without affecting the spring qualities thereof. A further advantage is that the desired amount of spring is imparted to the arm 9 either rearwardly, forwardly, or from either side.
It will thus be seen that while the device is simple and durable in construction the efficiency of the same is in no way sacrificed and that it is well adapted to perform the functions for which it is intended.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character described, comprising a clip provided with pins, a clampingplate hinged upon the pins, a packing arranged between the clamping-plate and one of the arms of the clip, means for forcing the plate against the support, and a spring-arm projecting from the clip and having a plurality of coils arranged at different angles to each other.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a U-shaped clip, the lower arm of which is formed with two diametrically opposite pins, a clamping-plate adapted to rest on the upper face of said arm and having extensions bent to form barrels and encircling said pins, a screw for forcing said clamping-plate against the support and a spring-arm arranged vertically of the top of said clip, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CALVIN P. W'EAVER.
