Letters Patent No. 70,392, dated November 5, 1867. i
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM P. BENNETT, ofEast Pepperell, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have4 invented a new and useful Kerosene-Burner Extinguisher; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of whieh Figures 1 and 2 are vertical and .transverse sections of a burner provided with my invention, these sections being taken in planes at right 'angles to each other.
Figure 8 is a top view,
Figure 4 an end view, and v Figure 5 a side view of the wick-tube and its appliances.
The principle of my invention is to .be found in the application of' two rollers to the wick-tube, so that the said, rollers may operate with and be operated by the wick, substantiallyin the manner as hereinafter explained. Also, in the combination and arrangement of slotted arms with the two rollers and the wick-tube, or with an additional or oap-tube4or collar to fit upon the wick-tube,'as hereinafter set forth. Also, in the combination, as well as the arrangement, of two air-stops with the rollers and wick-tube, when such rollers are applied to such tube so as to be operated by and`with the wick, in manner as hereinafter described.
Alin the drawings, A. denotesthe body, B the wick-tube, and C the air-deflector of a common kerosone-lamp rs, a a, whose disposed with respect to the wick-tube e top of such tube, to pass between thev journals are arranged in the slots c c c c of four slotted arms, b b 6 ZJ, in such manner as to enable the wiclqwhile being elevated above th two rollers, and separate them or move them asumier,l wick is next depressed, the rollers, by their gravity, may fall and come or approach together again over the, topof the wick, so as to extinguish any flame thereon. Each of the arms stands obliquely with respect to the top of the wick-tube, in manner as represented. They may project directly from the wick-tube, or from a extend I place a collar, g, provided with projections or stops It h, which, when the rollers fall in their lowest positions, extend top of the wick, they will at once extinguish the flame.
alongside of them, and up or nearly up to them, when they are in their highest positions. These guards or stopsV prevent the wick from becoming inflamed below the rollers, and prevent air from passing below the rollers to the wick, so as to aid in iniiaming it below the rollers. Besides this, the guards or stops are advantageous in other, respects.- By moving the wick vertically by the ordinary wick-elevator or spur-pinion E, fixed on a 'gross-shaft, we eaneect the necessary movements of the rollers, and, as Vthey drop by their gravity over the I"clai`m the'application of the two rollers a a' to the wick-tube of the burner, so that the said rollers may operate with andthe-operated by the wick, substantially 4in manner and for the purpose set forth.
I also claim the eombination and arrangement -of the slotted arms b b with the two rollers a a, and the i and the wick-'tube, applied and arranged together substantially as eXplained.
wick-tube, or l,with an additional tube or collar, f, appliedl to such wicktube as specified. l I also 'claim the combination, as well as the arrangement, of the stops or gua-rdsjz z. with the rollersl a'a W. P. BENNETT.
