IMPROVEMENT IN LAM PS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,089, dated March 6, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR D. VVOODBURY, of Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Kerosene-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and'which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

Figure 1, a vertical central section with the wick raised, and in Fig. 2 a like section with the wick drawn down to its lowest point.

In kerosene-burners as heretofore constructed a great inconvenience is experienced in lowering the wick by drawing it so low that the adjusting-wheel loses its hold upon the wick, so that the wick cannot be raised except by removing the burner from the lamp, or the same difficulty occurs if, when desirous of lighting the wick, the adjustingwheel be turned in the wrong direction.

The object of my invention is to overcome this objection and render it impossible to accidentally drop the wick below the adjusting-wheel; and my invention consists in a mechanism whereby the descent of the wick is arrested before it has fallen below the adjusting-wheel. i

To enable others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to fully describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

position seen in Fig. 2, the said pawl a, will fall upon the wheel F, as also seen in Fig. 2, and prevent the wheel from being turned to draw the wick lower, whereby it is impossible to draw the wick lower down, or below the control of the adjusting-wheel F. From this point the wick may be raised in the usual manner. Thus it will be seen that I have fully overcome a great annoyance in, not to say ohjection to, kerosene-lamps- My improvement is alike applicable to all descriptions of kerosene-burners.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim' as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The arrangement of the pawl a relatively to the wick and adjusting-wheel, so as to arrest I the descent of the wick before it has passed below the control of the adjusting-wheel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
