TO ALL W HOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, Jolin BUERCKY, of Overpecks Station, in Butler county, Ohio, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Brushes; and I, do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved brush.
Figure 2 represents the head of brush with the removable handle-plate detached.
Figures 3 and 4 represent the two side plates constituting the body of the brush-clamp.
The object of my invention is to furnish a cheap and durable brush-hend or clamp, with an adjustable handle, which may be readily refilled with bristles by any person with the greatest facility.
In fig. 1, the arms a a, which may be made or cast of malleable iron, in connection with the head-plate b, are arranged to receive the adjustable handle 0 between them. The handle may be secured by the thumb-' screw d at anysuitable angle for the convenient use of the brush.. The plates represented in figs. 3 and 4 are serrated on their inner faces, that they may grasp the brush D, which will be held between them by means of screws 1, 2, 3. The plate E has at each, end an angular ledge e e, with suitable holes to receive the screws which hold the plate F firmly in contact with brush D. The plate F is provided with two armsff, which are made of suitable length to extend across the head of the brush, and fit into the recesses 9 formed in the edge of plate E. These armsff serve as guards to prevent the bristles from entering thejoints between the plates E and F when the brush D is being inserted in the clamp. After inserting the brush]? and the projecting portion of the bristles is cut off at the head of the brush, a small piece of rosin may be melted and applied to the ends of the bristles, between the clamp-plates E F, before the head plate is secured thereon by means of the screws .9 s. i
The metal parts of my improved brush may be made'cheaply of cast iron, and it is evident that the brush may be used for various purposes.
Having fully described my improvement in brushes, what I claimand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The plate F, with its arms or guards ff, and plate F with ledges e e,'in combination with plate 6, arms a a, and adjustable handle 0, constructed, arranged, and used in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of August, A. D. 1867.
JOHN BUERCKY.
