Description

l J. BUCHANAN.
Broom Head.
IINITED STATES v PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BUCHANAN, OF AURORA, INDIANA.l
IMPROVED BROOM-HEAD.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 54, |04, dated April 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BUCHANAN, of Aurora, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indian a, haveinvented a new and Improved Broom-Head and I do hereby declare that the followin gis afull and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a metallic fastening in part for the straw or brush of a broom to the handle, so that the same head or fastening may be used for any number of brooms by throwing out the old brush and reiilling with new, and is so constructed as to be almost entirely concealed within the broom.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my broom-head by joining to the center of the concave side of a curved plate, G, Fig-.1, a stem, E, on the upper end of which I make a screw-shank, S, to be inserted into the end ofthe handle on opposite sides of the stem E. At a given point above the plate Gr, I join two loops, D D. Above these, near the p shank S, Ijoin to the stem E two arms, B B,
running parallel with the loops D D and supported by the braces c c. I then drop down y over the shank S an oblong curved cap or ring, A, constructed as shown in Fig. 2, each end resting upon the arms B B, as shown in Fig. 1. I also attach to the plate Gr four or more hooks, (marked h,) as shown in theaccompanying drawing l.
In order to make a broom on this head, I first lill the loops D D by inserting the end of an equal quantity of straw from opposite directions, then bend the straw down upon the plate Gr. I then till the cap or ring A by inserting more straw at the top of the cap or ring, brush end down. I then bend one-half of it down over each side of said cap upon the first filling. I then pass a cord, b, or its equivalent, around the straw, through the notches in the ends of the plate G, and tie, and then spring it downward till it passes under the thooks 7L, as shown in Fig. 3.
I claim- 1. The combination of the cap or ring A, arms B B, shank. S, stem E, the plate G, with its hooks h, and cord b, or its equivalent, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The loops D D, in combination with the cap or ring A and plate Gr, with its hooks h, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN BUCHANAN.
