Letters Patent No, 96,287, dated October 26, 1869.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making partof the same.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, R. M. THOMPSON, .of Coshocton, in the county of Coshocton, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements iu Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the f0llowing is a full, clear., and exact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompauyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, and to` the ings- Figure l is a front view of my improved wrench.

The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements in the'n'iechanical construction of a wrench with sliding jaw, as is hereinafter described, whereby I obtain a very simple and elijcient wrench, which may be put together by simply unit-ing the three castings composing the wrench, without the necessity of any finishing on 'said castings, and hence may be produced at a very moderate cost,lwhich vmakes it very useful for all purposes requiring an adjustable and cheap wrench, such as in agricultural machinery, harvesters, and other impleinents, in which a wrenchv is usually supplied to each machine.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construcvtion and operation.
The standard B has the head or jaw A secured at its top, and. has th'e grooves J and K formed in it, which grooves unite with each other, and are made through the standard B, in the direct-ion of the head A, as shown.
The corrugated face C is formed on the face of the standard B, under the head-A, as'shown, and the' lower end of the standard B, which may be cast with a slot, as "shown, or in a hollow cylindrical form, if preferred, forms the handle of the wrench, or it may be cast as a shank, and a wooden handle ailxed, if
' preferred.
The movable jaw D is made with the corrugated face E, and has a neck, L, of the saine thickness as the width of the slot J ,and a head, F, of the 'same dimensions, vertically and horizontally, as the slot K in the standard B, from which it is eviden-t that the'v jaw D is placed in position on the standard B, by passing the head F through the slot K, when the neck L can move up andA down in the slot J, as is readily seen.

The jaw D is secured in any desired position by pushing the Wedge G forward, which causes it to act as a wedge between the head F and thestandard B, and thusbinds the corrugated faces, C and E, of the .standard B and jaw D firmly together, which x'es the jaw on the standard.

The standard B and jaw D maybe made of any suitable material of sufficient strength, whether malloable or not; but the -Wedge G, or at least the arms I I of said wedge, should be of some malleable metal, so as to allow of their being bent, as before shown. .A
