IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-HEAD'S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent-N0. 55,948, dated June 26, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, J. D. M. ARMBRUST, ot' Apolloborongh, in the county of Armstrong and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode ot' Constructing Corn Brooms and Wisps; and I do hereby declare that the ollowing is a full and exact description thereof'. reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot my invention consists in the construction of corn-brooms by means ot' metallic bands or hoops fastened with screwbolts.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.
Figure l is a perspective view of the broom when constructed without the cap.
A is the upper band or hoop, having three bolt-holes, two ot' which are long, to allow the band to move on the bolt, thereby allowing the band to be drawn tight around the broom.
B is a piece of metal, having one long holthole, two of which are riveted upon said band A, therebystrengthening the band and giving the broom shape.
C is the lower band, similar iu construction and use to band A.
D is a piece of metal, two of which are riveted upon band C, similar in construction and use toB upon band A.
E E represent the section of the handle,
which is shaped like a wedge, and through which the two bolts pass, and to which all the fixtures are attached.
F is a screw-bolt, two of which pass through the brooms and hold the whole thing firmly together.
G G is the nut or burr of the bolt, which is square below, with a long round top, to cover the end of the screw and avoid catching and tearing clothes in using the broom.
H is a top or cover t'or the top of the broom, which may be used or not at pleasure, and is used to protect the ends ot' the broom-corn.
The pieces B and D being riveted to the bands A and C, the whole except the cap is fastened to the handle b v means of the sci ewbolts, which may then be hlled and retlled at pleasure. The cap is slipped over the handle, and is put on after the broom is made.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The metallic band composed of thin metal and furnished with slots, in combination with the strengthening pieces and bolts and nuts, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the movable cap-piece and the handle, slotted at its lower end for the passage of the bolts, constructed as described, and for the purpose set forth.
J. D. M. ARMBRUST.
