TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, GEPHAS SMITH, of Stockbridge, in the county of Ingham, and in the State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hanging Tops to Buggies and Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of refcrencemarked thereon.-
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a portion of one side of the body of the buggy to which the top is attached. B and C represent two metallic bars, which are hinged together at their rear ends, as seen at x. The bar B is cast with a hole at each end, running crosswise of it, through which holes pass the bolts D D, which secure said bar to the body A. The bar 0 O is cast with a seriesof sockets, E E, upon'its upper side, into which the ends .of the hows forming the top pass and are secured. The bar C-is provided near its forward end, and on one edge, with a headed pin, H. G- reprcsents a long link or metallic plate, provided with a slot which runs from near one end to near the other. The bolt D passes through the slot of this plate at one end, confining it to the bar B,'hut giving it play to turn when necessary. The pin H onbar C passes through the slot of this plate G. It will now be seen that when the top is to be turned back the forward end of bar 0 is raised, turning upon its hinge at .2 until it makes a quarter revolution, in which event the pin H strikes the upper end of the slot in plate G, which stops the top and stations it in this position. When the top is raised and placed in upright position, a set-screw, at J, on the second bow of the top,'passes through the slotin plate G, and confines the top in said upright position. v
A top made in this manner is cheaper and more simple than the old style, is more easily managed, and never cracks the material of which it is made.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
The bars B and C, constructed and used with the slotted plate G, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I- claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of July, 1867.
