UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
ISAAC N. TOPLIFF, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT m cuP-omcuz.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 69,866, dated October 15, 1867; antedated September 28, 1867.
Be it known that I, IsAAo N. TOPLIFF, of the city of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Clip-Circle, or part of a circle for a coupling on four-wheeled vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which the diagram is a perspective view.
A represents a segment or one part of the olip circle. 1) represents the axle-stock or wooden portion of the axle. E represents the iron portion of the axle. B represents a spur, which penetrates the wooden stock D, for the purpose of securing theclip-circle A in its proper place, the said clip-circle A being fastened to the Wooden stock D and iron portion of the axle E by a small bar of iron secured by nuts upon the clip part of the circle A.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
The clip-circle A is made from a pattern duly molded, from which may be cast or forged of some metal the said clip-circle A.
The clip-circle A may be made a whole circle or in sections. If in sections, two to be used upon one vehicle, the said circle or sections being placed upon the forward axle of the vehicle at equal distance from the kingbolt, the spur B being necessary to keep the said clip-circle or sections in proper position should the nuts beneath the iron portion of the axle E and Wooden stock D become loosened, another circle or portions of a circle being attached to the head-block and reach in the usual manner.
I do not claim as new the construction of clip-circles of metal by forging.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The construction of a clip-circle for carriages, &c., in the form and manner described, with the spur B, for the purpose substantially A as set forth.
2. I further claim as new the spur B, substantially as set forth.
ISAAC N. TOPLIFF.
