GEORGE LONG, or MARLBCRO TOWNSHIP, OHIO.
Letters PatentNo. 67,126, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BRAKE.
fiilge firhehrh man in in time fitters than amt muting sari at figs same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, GEORGE LONG, of Marlboro township, in the county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the annexed drawings forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure is an elevation of wagon, showing position of brake and attachments.
Figure 2 is a plan of running parts, showing'position of levers, connecting links, &c., and
Figure 3 is a perspective, showing the position and action of anti-brake levers.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing the wagon that the box may slide on the front bedpiece, and in so connecting the said front bed-piece with levers attached to the brakes as that on descending a declivity the front and rear parts of the running parts shall be brought nearer each other, and by so doing shall cause the brakes to bear on the wheels, and thus retard the movement of the loadjand also in the use of antibrake levers, whereby the apparatus before described shall be prevented from acting when the wagon is being y backed.
- To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I willproceod to describe its construction and operation.
'A is the body of the wagon, B the wheels, 0 the axles, U the pole, T the coupling-polo. On the couplingpole T is placed the board X, on which board is fastened the levers E E and I I by means of the bolts GG and H H. On one end of the levers E E are attached the brake-pieces F F, and their other extremities are attached to the levers I I. The other ends of the levers I I are. attached to-the connecting-links K K, which are attached to the front bed-piece D of the wagon. In this bed-piece D are fixed two rollers, S S, and in the endof the coupling-piece T is cut a slotted hole, N, through which the king-bolt passes. It will be readily seen that on L going down a hill the hind and front axles will approach each other by means of the body A moving along on the rollers S, which it will be allowed to do by reason of the slot N in the coupling-piece T, and that by reason of such approaching the 'links K K will act on the levers I I, which in turn will act on the levers E E, causing L the brakes F- F to come in contact with the wheels B B, and thus retarding the motion of the wagon. It will i also be seen that as soon as the power is again appliedto the front aisles they will separate further from the rear axles, producing an exactly opposite motion in the connecting-links and-levers, and thereby removing the brakes from the wheels; The lever O in fig. 3 is attached to the side of the box A by the bolt a, and is connected at C with the lever P. This lever P is attached to the bottom of the box A by the bolt 6, and the end bears on the front bed-piece D. It will be seen that by holding the levers O and Pin the position shown that the two axles would be prevented from coming nearer each other, so that the wagon could be backed with I out interference from the brakes, while with the levers in the position shown by the dotted levers O and P they could approach each other, and so cause the action of the brakes.
I do not 'claim as my invention the compound levers E I E I, or the brake-pieces F, as these arein commen use; but what I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The peculiar combination and arrangement of the front bed-piece D, connecting-link K K, and compound levers E I E I, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified; and
2. The peculiar combination and arrangement of the lever O with the-lever P, forming a compound anti- I; brake lever, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
, GEORGE LONG. Witnesses:
