FREDRIOK JAMES ELLIS AND AUBREY R. DOUG, OF LONDON, CANADA.
BROOM SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,182, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed February 27, 1902. Serial No. 95,861. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDRIOK JAMES ELLIs and AUBREY R. Bone, citizens of Canada, residing at London, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification. 7
Our invention relates to broom-heads; and it consists in the extremely simple and inexpensive, easily-applied, and efficient means hereinafter specifically described and claimed for preventing doubling or twisting of the broom-head and otherwise lending strength and durability to the head.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a broom-head equipped with our improvements; Fig. 2, a detail transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the metallic band forming part of our improvements, removed from the broom-head.
Referring by letter to said drawings, A is a broom-head formed of broom-corn or other suitable material and attached to a handle B in the ordinary or any other approved manner; C C, the ordinary twine bindings, which may be employed on the upper portion of the broom-head, and D the metallic band of my improvement. The band D is of such length that when it is passed around the broom-head at or about the horizontal median line thereof the lapped portions of its arms a will eX- tend approximately two -thirds of the distance across one side of the head, as shown in Fig. 1this in order to enable the continuous connection of fine wire or twine E, presently described, to better hold the arms together and on the head A and also to add to the strength of the head. At the ends of its said arms a the band D is provided with pointed prongs 19, disposed at right angles to the arms. These prongs preferably correspond in length to the thickness of the head A, and when the band is applied to said head they are designed to be embedded in the head after the manner best shown in Fig. 2, so as to assist inholding the band in position and remove a portion of the strain from the fine wire or thread E, The latter is carried to and fro through the head A and looped over the portions of the band at opposite sides of the head, and it serves, in addition to connecting the band to the head, to hold the lapped arms a of the band together.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that the band D is applied to the headA and secured thereon through the medium of the wire or twine E with great facility, with the result that my improvements add but little to the cost of producing the broom. It will also be appreciated that when applied and connected to the band A, at or about the hori zontal median line thereof, the band D is calculated to lend considerable strength to the head and effectually prevent the objectionable undue bending or twisting of the head, and, further, that when the band D is sewed perfectly tight to the broom-corn or other material of the broom-head the connection of the handle B and the upper portion of the head is materially strengthened and the durability of the broom as a whole increased.
Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination with the broom-head; of the metallic band surrounding the head at or about the horizontal median line thereof, and having the lapped arms at extending across the major portion of one side of the head, and terminating in the angular prongs b corresponding in length to the thickness of the head, and embedded therein, and the continuous connection extending from one edge of the head to the other, and passed to and fro through the head and looped over the portions of the band at opposite sides of said head.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses FREDRIOK JAMES ELLIS. AUBREY R. BOUG.
