Description

c. BLomm J.AL-ING.
lhnbrovementin Broom Heads.
No. 121 378. PtentedDec.5,1871,
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,578, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CORNELIUS BLOM, Jr., and J OHN ALING, of Holland, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Broom-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specifloat-ion.
This invention relates to the manufacture of brooms; and consists of a metallic broom-head and mode of screwing the brush of the broom therein.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side View of the broom, the head being constructed according to our invention. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the broom-head. B is a wire formed of double wire or other suitable material, with a shank attached to the center of the head for fastening to the handle, as seen in the drawing. The parts of this clamp are separate from the center down on each edge of the head, and the parts of each are connected together by a strap, G,
which straps are curved or bent so that their ends are nearly in contact at the edges of the broom, as seen in Fig. 2. The two straps thus form together an oval-shaped hoop in two parts. D is a concave plate attached to each part of the clamp, which together form a casing which incloses the upper portion of the brush. E is the brush of the broom. F is the handle. g g are screws which pass through the brush and connect the two straps O 0 together. The brush E is firmly held between the two straps O and the platesD, thus making a strong and durable broomhead.
The advantages are that when the broom Wears out another brush may be inserted by simplytakin g out the screws 9 g. The head itself will last for an indefinite length of time.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A broom-head formed of the clamp B, straps G G, and casing-plates D D, arranged substantially as described.
CORNELIUS BLOM, JR. JOHN ALING.
