Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monmouth, in the County of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented a-new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for J ar-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the style, mechanism, and method of fastening the top covers on jars. These improvements above referred to are illustrated in the accornpanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a jar provided with my improved fastenin g as' it appears when confining the cover upon the jar. Fig. 2 is a top plan view as it appears when confining the top cover to the jar. Fig. 3 is a vertical seotionl'of the top covcrand jar, drawn on the line A A, as shown in Fig. 2, when the top cover is confined to the jar. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the top cover and jar, drawn on the line-B B, as shown in Fig. 2, when the cover is confined to the jar. Fig. 5 is a lnodification of the lever 5.

The bail, which is made of round steel wire, is formed with angular arms, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The recesses in the side ofthe jar arediametrically opposite each other and conform to the pivoted angular ends of the bail. The elastic gasket fits around onthe topofthe jar in the usualmanner.` .The top coverconforms to and rests upon the elastic gasket when in position to be fastened.
Before attaching the bail to the jar one end of the bail is passed throughthe slot in the lever. The two angular ends of the bail are then sprung into the recesses in the side of the jar. The bail-and. lever are then in position to operate as a fastener and are free to Swing to either side of the jar. The elastic gasket and top cover being placedy in position, as indicated in the drawings, all that remains to be done in fastening the top cover -to the jar is to elevatelthe arched portion of the bail until it comes in conta'ct with the edge of the elevated top portion of `the cover, with the lever resting near the middle portion of 'the topV part of the bail, this'position -of the lever and bail being indicated by the dotted lines O in Fig. 3. With the bail operating on the lower side of the slotiin the lever and the short arm of the lever operating upon one side of the double-inclined surface Sthelong arm of the lever is .then to be elevated to a position approaching more nearly the vertical and indicated by thedotted lines vD in order. to fasten thel cover. While the long arm of the lever is being thus elevated the middle portion of the bail is graduallysprung upward, which gives it an increasing downward resistance as the long arm of the lever rises and at the same time the bail gradually slides in the slottoward the short arm of the lever, and when the position D has been reached the bail springs into the niche in the top portion of the cover and there rests directly over the center of and confining the cover to the jar by virtue of its natural recoil.v When in that position, the lever is free to swing upon either side of the cover. The Operation of fastening the IOC top cover, as just described, may be exeeuted from either side of the jar, and the lever may operate upon either side of the double-inclined plain surface 8. To remove the lid requires but to lift the long arm of the lever from the position shown in the dotted linesV D to a position approaching more nearly to the vertical. The bail being pivoted on the lower side of the slot in the lever is thus raised out of the niche and carried to one side of the top portion of the jar, when of its own recoil and weight it drops to the side of the jar and the 1id remains free to be detached.
An advantage of my invention is that by means of the combination of the bail, lever, and cover a person is enabled to fasten the lid to the jar with very slight exertion and very quickly and also to remove the same with equal ease. The bail is made of such height as to fasten the cover sufficiently, tightly, and securely under ordinary circumstances. If it is desired to fasten the lid more tightly, an additional elastic gasket may be used. An advantage of the modification of the lever, (shown in Fig. 5,) is that the bar 12 serves as a handle to be used both in fastening the cover and in lifting and carrying the jar.
I am aware that prior to my invention fasteners for jars have been made wherein they operate upon a bail on the top of the jar, and therefore do not claim that part of the combination broad1y; but
What I do ciaim as my invention, and desire to secure by these Letters Patent, is-
l. In a jar-closure, a baii Secured to the j ar, a cover,a hemispherical elevation thereon having a groove in which said bail is adapted to seat, a siotted lever mounted on said bail, and a groove in said cover in which said lever works to seat and unseat the bail, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a jar-closure, recesses in the Sides of the jar, a bail pivoted therein, a cover having a grooved apex to receive said bail, a slotted lever mounted on said bail, and the cover provided with a bearing-surface to assist said lever in seating and unseating the bail, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a jar-ciosure, a bail pivoted in the sides of the jar,a cover havin ga hemispherical elevation thereon, a groove in said elevation having the center of its base raised and receding toward the ends of the groove,a slotted lever mounted on said bail and adapted to seat in said groove having a raised base, and a groove at the apex of said hemispherical eievation at right angles to said first-mentioned groove in which said bail is adapted to seat, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a jar-closure, a bail pivoted in the sides of the jar, a cover having ahemispherical eievation thereon, a groove in said elevation having its base sla'nting upwardly to the center, a slotted lever to seat in said groove, having a transverse bar at one end, mounted on said bail, and a groove at the apex of said hemispherical elevation at right angles to said first-mentioned groove in which said bail is adapted to seat, substantially as shown and described.
5. Ajar-closure consistingofacover having ahemispherical elevation thereon, a groove in said elevation having its base slanting upwardly from each end to the center, a slotted lever mounted on said bail, a groove at the apex of said hemispherical elevation at right angles to said first-mentioned groove, and a baii to seat in said groove at the a'pex of said hemispherical elevation, in combination with a jar having recesses for the reception of the ends of said bail, substantially as shown and described.
6. In combination with a jar having its top edge slanting inwardl y, a cover to seat on said slanting edge having an annular' depending fiange to fit inside the mouth of the jar, a hemispherical elevation on said cover having a grooved apex, a bail pivotally secured in the sides of said jar adapted to seat in said groove, a slotted lever mounted on said bail, and a groove in said cover in which said lever works to seat and unseat said bail, substantially as shown and described.
