BRANDING-TOOL.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,993, dated January 1, 1850.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, LEWIS STARK, of Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Branding-Tool; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, which distinguishes it from all other things before known, and of the manner of making, constructing, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making .part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective View of its outside appearance. (a) is the type with one end beveled so as to form a dove-tailed joint when inserted in the branding stock.

(b) the type of all other branding stocks are made in straightsquare blocks, consequently they will work loose while using and fall out as all branders will affirm.

, (c) and (d) are outer and inner shells istant from each other sufficient to let the air pass between them.

(e) is a vertical slide with four round holes through it (marked (f)) to permit the air to pass through it; also the outer and inner shells have like holes through them marked (g) but not opposite to each other, the object of these holes being thus placed is to prevent the re from falling out and at the same time admit the air to Fig. 3, is a perpendicular secthe fire. The object of the shell is (which I make of Russian iron or it may be made of other metal) to hold coals of fire, by means of which the branding tool is kept hot while using, and the object of the inner shell to cause the branding tool to retain its heat a longer period of time than it would without it, and also to prevent the coals of tire from falling out while using, for as the holes through the outer and inner shell are not opposite to each other the coals of fire will not be likely to fall out; the obj ect of the slide is also to be a helper in preventing the fire from falling out.

(k) is a pipe or tube through which the smoke and gas of the coal is permitted to escape.

\ is a small door through which the coal is put into the shell and then closed so that the fire is kept safe from harm, and may be carried in safety anywhere for the purpose of branding.

There have been branding stocks made and closed around with sheet iron though not Closed up at the top as mine is, but they could not be carried in safety into buildings on account of the coals of tire frequently dropping out thro-ugh the draft holes, but by the use of mine that difficulty is obviated.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent* The combination of the inner with the outer shell substantially in the manner described as applied to the branding tool.
